Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Nehemiah 7:67

Enumeration Of Their Slaves (Nehemiah 7:67 ). Nehemiah 7:67 ‘Besides their male slaves and their female slaves, of whom there were seven thousand three hundred and thirty seven, and they had two hundred and forty five singing men and singing women.’ The only difference from Ezra 2:0 lies in the fact that Ezra 2:0 gives a round number of two hundred singing men and women. This again confirms that the list in Ezra was prior to that in Nehemiah. By the time of the second list, either more... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Nehemiah 7:68-69

Enumeration Of The Beasts Of Burden (Nehemiah 7:68-69 ). Nehemiah 7:68-69 ‘Their horses were seven hundred and thirty six; their mules, two hundred and forty five; their camels, four hundred and thirty five; their asses, six thousand seven hundred and twenty.’ These are possibly enumerated as evidence of wealth, or because they were seen as having faithfully served the needs of the community on their journey. The camels and asses especially would have been necessary in order to carry the... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Nehemiah 7:70-72

Contributions Towards The Treasury For The Temple (Nehemiah 7:70-72 ). It is at this point that this list differs considerably from the one in Ezra 2:0. This may have been because Sheshbazzar now being dead, his portion could be enumerated, whilst while he was alive he did not want it known. Or it may simply be that the writer in Ezra 2:0 simply abbreviated the list in his possession, and rounded up the numbers, considering that that was what really mattered. Ezra certainly appears to have... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Nehemiah 7:73

Nehemiah 7:73 ‘So the priests, and the Levites, and the gatekeepers, and the singers, and some of the people, and the Nethinim, and all Israel, dwelt in their cities, and when the seventh month was come, the children of Israel were in their cities.’ This confirms what was said in Nehemiah 7:6 that all returned to their own cities (which for some would include Jerusalem). The people are listed in terms of previous designations: · The priests. · The Levites. · Some of the people. ‘Some’ may have... read more

Nehemiah 7:5-Letter of Jeremiah : a. Enumeration of the Returned Exiles.— This section= Ezra 2:1-Wisdom of Solomon :; cf. the Greek Ezra 5:7-Esther :. PART IV ( Nehemiah 7:73 b – Nehemiah 10:39). Ezra and the Law. Nehemiah 7:73 b – Nehemiah 8:12 . The Reading of the Law. Nehemiah 7:73 b. These words are repeated by mistake from Ezra 3:1. Nehemiah 8:1 . Cf. Ezra 7:6-2 Samuel :. It is clear that we have here only part of the original narrative. It is difficult to understand, knowing what we do about Ezra from other parts of the book, how the initiative regarding the reading of the Law should have been taken by the people as is here... read more

The Tirshatha, i.e. the governor, to wit, Nehemiah. So it is no wonder that the number of the monies, and other things here contributed, differ from that Ezra 2:0, because this is another collection; that was made in Zerubbabel’s time, and this in Ezra’s. read more

Preacher's Complete Homiletical Commentary - Nehemiah 7:1-73

EXPLANATORY NOTES.] “The second section of this book (chaps. 7–12:43) furnishes a description of the further efforts of Nehemiah to increase and insure the prosperity of the community in Judah and Jerusalem: first, by securing Jerusalem from hostile attacks; then, by seeking to increase the population of the city; and, lastly, by endeavouring to bring the domestic and civil life of the people into conformity with the precepts of the law, and thus to furnish the necessary moral and religious... read more
