May 1st, 2022: Freedom from Sin, Sunday School Romans 6:1-14
Freedom From Sin
This week’s lesson contains the promise that “sin shall not have dominion over you” (see Romans 6:14). Through God’s grace we are enabled to rise above sin and defeat it and enjoy a totally new way of life. Sadly, many Christians don’t seem to know about this possibility. They struggle in their own strength to overcome sin, unaware that they must die to self-effort before they can find the key to new life and serve their new Master.
I. THE BELIEVER’S STANDING (Romans 6:1-5)
It’s never right to sin, even if the end result might seem to be right (Romans 6:1-2).
Victory over sin and the sin nature became possible when we placed our faith in Jesus Christ (Romans 6:3).
Our lives should be radically different after accepting Jesus Christ as Saviour because we share the nature and quality of the resurrection life of Christ (Romans 6:4-6).
II. THE BELIEVER’S LIBERATION FROM SIN’S POWER (Romans 6:6-10)
Before salvation, our will was enslaved to sin with no choice but to disobey God. Now we are free to choose to obey Christ (Romans 6:7-10).
III. THE BELIEVER’S PRACTICE (Romans 6:11-14)
A greatest benefit of the Christian life is the new life we have in God through Jesus Christ (Romans 6:11).
God provides the motive and the power to enable us to choose not to sin when we are faced with a temptation (Romans 6:12-14; I Corinthians 10:13).
The true Christian must and will leave behind a sinful life because of the fundamental change that justification brings into their lives. The new life we live is based in our union with Jesus Christ which is sealed by the positional change worked into our lives through justification. We no longer belong to sin; instead, we belong to Christ. This is our new position forever. Because of this, we begin to live a life consistent with that fact. We have a new standing in Christ, and our union with Him cancels the reign of sin over us forever. God’s grace raises us to a new life, a life of righteousness and holiness, as we seek to live the life Christ calls us to. Yes, we died to sin, but we are alive in Christ!”
