Sunday School Lesson, January 23, 2022, Justice, Judges, and Priests DEUTERONOMY 16: 18-20; 17: 8-13 The second generation hears stories of the great events that began their national history. 18 God's law said that the people were to appoint judges and officers who would judge with righteous judgment. Anyone who served in law enforcement or the judicial system were to judge with righteous judgment. Three things are specifically listed as being unrighteous:

This week’s lesson reveals that God demands even today, that His people practice right judgment or justice, and that their leaders demonstrate the same. This is certainly the right lesson for us in light of the unjust political system and policies we are facing here in America.

God has ordained the powers that rule over us and they are expected to do it justly and fairly (Deuteronomy 16:18; Romans 13:1-5)
Our leaders are called to make fair and just decisions without being partial or showing favoritism (Deuteronomy 16:19-20).
Sometimes judges find it difficult to rule in some cases; so they would be wise to seek help (Deuteronomy 17:8-9).
When judges make right and fair decisions, it behooves us to abide by their rulings (Deuteronomy 17:10-11).
There will always be negative results when we act presumptuously and refuse to abide by fair judicial rulings (Deuteronomy 17:12-13).
As human beings, and certainly as Christians, we have the duty to work for justice for everyone. We are obligated by God’s Word and the LORD Himself to seek out just leaders who will make just and fair decisions. Although the laws given in today’s lesson are given particularly to Israel, the principles behind them are the same for us today. May we take the time to make sure that the leaders we choose, as well as we ourselves, know the difference between justice and injustice and demonstrate it in our lives.
