Psalm 89:38 But thou hast cast off and abhorred, thou hast been wroth with thine anointed.
From scripture, we know that "Thine anointed" is Jesus. Scripture also tells us this:
Matthew 3:17 .... This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
If God is well pleased with The Son, the anointed one, then why does the psalmist speak of God being wroth with and casting him off?
Consider this: it impossible to please God without faith. Jesus is the fullest expression of a life of faith (a life lived by the guidance of God). We are told that *we live by the faith of the Son* (Gal 3:21) and in so doing, God is well pleased with us. How do we live by his faith? When we to, are led by the Spirit, as Jesus was. And Ultimately, the Spirit led him to live and die for the people.
When he took our sin, he received the punishment for it, undiluted wrath of God. And in him, the old man is crucified (Rom 6:6) through that wrath.. he died so we can live, we died in/with him so others may live (die daily to self).
So in Christ, we both live (new man) and die (old man), we drawn to (renewed mind) and yet cut off from God (carnal mind) (See Rom 7:14-25), he is pleased (faith) and yet wroth (sin). Ultimately, to remain in Christ in one sense means the old man dies daily but in another sense, he is buried permanently. In either sense, Christ enables us to live according to the good pleasure of God (Phil 2:13) even while the old man is dying.... died. Selah.
