The Ammonites have been oppressing Israel: punishment by God for Israel going off into sin. Jephthah is recruited to deliver Israel from their hand, but before going to battle, wants to see if diplomacy will work first. He asks the Ammonite king what he wants, to which he receives a reply that the Ammonites want their land back that Israel allegedly stole some 300 years before. Jephthah was going to have none of that and proceeds to give the king of Ammon a history lesson as to why he's wrong about that charge. Why was the king of Ammon wrong? In Lesson 36 of our study of Judges we learn the answer to this question.
