Revelation 16:1

Then I heard a loud voice from the temple<cr>1</cr> saying to the seven angels,<cr>2</cr> “Go, pour out the seven bowls of God’s wrath on the earth.”<cr>3</cr>

The first angel went and poured out his bowl on the land,<cr>1</cr> and ugly, festering sores<cr>2</cr> broke out on the people who had the mark of the beast and worshiped its image.<cr>3</cr>

Revelation 16:2

The second angel poured out his bowl on the sea, and it turned into blood like that of a dead person, and every living thing in the sea died.<cr>1</cr>

Revelation 16:3

The third angel poured out his bowl on the rivers and springs of water,<cr>1</cr> and they became blood.<cr>2</cr>

Revelation 16:4

Then I heard the angel in charge of the waters say:<pb/><poetry>“You are just in these judgments,<cr>1</cr> O Holy One,<cr>2</cr> <indent>you who are and who were;<cr>3</cr> </indent>

Revelation 16:5

for they have shed the blood of your holy people and your prophets,<cr>1</cr> <indent>and you have given them blood to drink<cr>2</cr> as they deserve.”</indent>

Revelation 16:6

And I heard the altar<cr>1</cr> respond:<pb/><poetry>“Yes, Lord God Almighty,<cr>2</cr> <indent>true and just are your judgments.”<cr>3</cr> </indent></poetry>

Revelation 16:7

The fourth angel<cr>1</cr> poured out his bowl on the sun,<cr>2</cr> and the sun was allowed to scorch people with fire.<cr>3</cr>

Revelation 16:8

They were seared by the intense heat and they cursed the name of God,<cr>1</cr> who had control over these plagues, but they refused to repent<cr>2</cr> and glorify him.<cr>3</cr>

Revelation 16:9

The fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast,<cr>1</cr> and its kingdom was plunged into darkness.<cr>2</cr> People gnawed their tongues in agony

Revelation 16:10

and cursed<cr>1</cr> the God of heaven<cr>2</cr> because of their pains and their sores,<cr>3</cr> but they refused to repent of what they had done.<cr>4</cr>

Revelation 16:11

The sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates,<cr>1</cr> and its water was dried up to prepare the way<cr>2</cr> for the kings from the East.<cr>3</cr>

Revelation 16:12

Then I saw three impure spirits<cr>1</cr> that looked like frogs;<cr>2</cr> they came out of the mouth of the dragon,<cr>3</cr> out of the mouth of the beast<cr>4</cr> and out of the mouth of the false prophet.<cr>5</cr>

Revelation 16:13

They are demonic spirits<cr>1</cr> that perform signs,<cr>2</cr> and they go out to the kings of the whole world,<cr>3</cr> to gather them for the battle<cr>4</cr> on the great day<cr>5</cr> of God Almighty.<pb/>

Revelation 16:14

<woj>“Look, I come like a thief!<cr>1</cr> Blessed is the one who stays awake<cr>2</cr> and remains clothed, so as not to go naked and be shamefully exposed.”<cr>3</cr> </woj>

Revelation 16:15

Then they gathered the kings together<cr>1</cr> to the place that in Hebrew<cr>2</cr> is called Armageddon.<cr>3</cr>

Revelation 16:16

The seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air,<cr>1</cr> and out of the temple<cr>2</cr> came a loud voice<cr>3</cr> from the throne, saying, “It is done!”<cr>4</cr>

Revelation 16:17

Then there came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder<cr>1</cr> and a severe earthquake.<cr>2</cr> No earthquake like it has ever occurred since mankind has been on earth,<cr>3</cr> so tremendous was the quake.

Revelation 16:18

The great city<cr>1</cr> split into three parts, and the cities of the nations collapsed. God remembered<cr>2</cr> Babylon the Great<cr>3</cr> and gave her the cup filled with the wine of the fury of his wrath.<cr>4</cr>

Revelation 16:19

Every island fled away and the mountains could not be found.<cr>1</cr>

Revelation 16:20

From the sky huge hailstones,<cr>1</cr> each weighing about a hundred pounds,<ft>1</ft> fell on people. And they cursed God<cr>2</cr> on account of the plague of hail,<cr>3</cr> because the plague was so terrible.

The woman was dressed in purple and scarlet, and was glittering with gold, precious stones and pearls.<cr>1</cr> She held a golden cup<cr>2</cr> in her hand, filled with abominable things and the filth of her adulteries.<cr>3</cr>

The name written on her forehead was a mystery:<cr>1</cr> <pb/><center><smallCap>babylon the great</smallCap><cr>2</cr> </center><pb/><center><smallCap>the mother of prostitutes</smallCap><cr>3</cr> </center><pb/><center><smallCap>and of the abominations of the earth</smallCap>.</center>

Revelation 17:5

I saw that the woman was drunk with the blood of God’s holy people,<cr>1</cr> the blood of those who bore testimony to Jesus.<pb/>When I saw her, I was greatly astonished.

Revelation 17:6

Then the angel said to me: “Why are you astonished? I will explain to you the mystery<cr>1</cr> of the woman and of the beast she rides, which has the seven heads and ten horns.<cr>2</cr>

Revelation 17:7

The beast, which you saw, once was, now is not, and yet will come up out of the Abyss<cr>1</cr> and go to its destruction.<cr>2</cr> The inhabitants of the earth<cr>3</cr> whose names have not been written in the book of life<cr>4</cr> from the creation of the world will be astonished<cr>5</cr> when they see the beast, because it once was, now is not, and yet will come.

Revelation 17:8

“This calls for a mind with wisdom.<cr>1</cr> The seven heads<cr>2</cr> are seven hills on which the woman sits.

Revelation 17:9

They are also seven kings. Five have fallen, one is, the other has not yet come; but when he does come, he must remain for only a little while.

Revelation 17:10

The beast who once was, and now is not,<cr>1</cr> is an eighth king. He belongs to the seven and is going to his destruction.

Revelation 17:11

“The ten horns<cr>1</cr> you saw are ten kings who have not yet received a kingdom, but who for one hour<cr>2</cr> will receive authority as kings along with the beast.

Revelation 17:12

They have one purpose and will give their power and authority to the beast.<cr>1</cr>

Revelation 17:13

They will wage war<cr>1</cr> against the Lamb, but the Lamb will triumph over<cr>2</cr> them because he is Lord of lords and King of kings<cr>3</cr> —and with him will be his called, chosen<cr>4</cr> and faithful followers.”

Revelation 17:14

Then the angel said to me, “The waters<cr>1</cr> you saw, where the prostitute sits, are peoples, multitudes, nations and languages.<cr>2</cr>

Revelation 17:15

The beast and the ten horns<cr>1</cr> you saw will hate the prostitute.<cr>2</cr> They will bring her to ruin<cr>3</cr> and leave her naked;<cr>4</cr> they will eat her flesh<cr>5</cr> and burn her with fire.<cr>6</cr>

Revelation 17:16

For God has put it into their hearts<cr>1</cr> to accomplish his purpose by agreeing to hand over to the beast their royal authority,<cr>2</cr> until God’s words are fulfilled.<cr>3</cr>

Revelation 17:17

The woman you saw is the great city<cr>1</cr> that rules over the kings of the earth.”

Revelation 17:18

Revelation 18:1

After this I saw another angel<cr>1</cr> coming down from heaven.<cr>2</cr> He had great authority, and the earth was illuminated by his splendor.<cr>3</cr>

With a mighty voice he shouted:<pb/><poetry>“‘Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great!’<ft>1</ft><cr>1</cr> <indent>She has become a dwelling for demons</indent> and a haunt for every impure spirit,<cr>2</cr> <indent>a haunt for every unclean bird,</indent> <indent>a haunt for every unclean and detestable animal.<cr>3</cr> </indent>

Revelation 18:2

For all the nations have drunk <indent>the maddening wine of her adulteries.<cr>1</cr> </indent> The kings of the earth committed adultery with her,<cr>2</cr> <indent>and the merchants of the earth grew rich<cr>3</cr> from her excessive luxuries.”<cr>4</cr> </indent>

Then I heard another voice from heaven say:<pb/><poetry>“‘Come out of her, my people,’<ft>1</ft><cr>1</cr> <indent>so that you will not share in her sins,</indent> <indent>so that you will not receive any of her plagues;<cr>2</cr> </indent>

for her sins are piled up to heaven,<cr>1</cr> <indent>and God has remembered<cr>2</cr> her crimes.</indent>

Revelation 18:5

Give back to her as she has given; <indent>pay her back<cr>1</cr> double<cr>2</cr> for what she has done.</indent> <indent>Pour her a double portion from her own cup.<cr>3</cr> </indent>

Revelation 18:6

Give her as much torment and grief <indent>as the glory and luxury she gave herself.<cr>1</cr> </indent> In her heart she boasts, <indent>‘I sit enthroned as queen.</indent> I am not a widow;<ft>1</ft> <indent>I will never mourn.’<cr>2</cr> </indent>

Revelation 18:7

Therefore in one day<cr>1</cr> her plagues will overtake her: <indent>death, mourning and famine.</indent> She will be consumed by fire,<cr>2</cr> <indent>for mighty is the Lord God who judges her.</indent>

“When the kings of the earth who committed adultery with her<cr>1</cr> and shared her luxury<cr>2</cr> see the smoke of her burning,<cr>3</cr> they will weep and mourn over her.<cr>4</cr>

“The merchants<cr>1</cr> of the earth will weep and mourn<cr>2</cr> over her because no one buys their cargoes anymore<cr>3</cr> —

cargoes of gold, silver, precious stones and pearls; fine linen, purple, silk and scarlet cloth; every sort of citron wood, and articles of every kind made of ivory, costly wood, bronze, iron and marble;<cr>1</cr>

Revelation 18:12

cargoes of cinnamon and spice, of incense, myrrh and frankincense, of wine and olive oil, of fine flour and wheat; cattle and sheep; horses and carriages; and human beings sold as slaves.<cr>1</cr>

“They will say, ‘The fruit you longed for is gone from you. All your luxury and splendor have vanished, never to be recovered.’

The merchants who sold these things and gained their wealth from her<cr>1</cr> will stand far off,<cr>2</cr> terrified at her torment. They will weep and mourn<cr>3</cr>

When they see the smoke of her burning,<cr>1</cr> they will exclaim, ‘Was there ever a city like this great city<cr>2</cr> ?’<cr>3</cr>

They will throw dust on their heads,<cr>1</cr> and with weeping and mourning<cr>2</cr> cry out:<pb/><poetry>“‘Woe! Woe to you, great city,<cr>3</cr> <indent>where all who had ships on the sea</indent> <indent>became rich through her wealth!</indent> In one hour she has been brought to ruin!’<cr>4</cr> </poetry><pb/><poetry>

“Rejoice over her, you heavens!<cr>1</cr> <indent>Rejoice, you people of God!</indent> <indent>Rejoice, apostles and prophets!</indent> For God has judged her <indent>with the judgment she imposed on you.”<cr>2</cr> </indent>

Then a mighty angel<cr>1</cr> picked up a boulder the size of a large millstone and threw it into the sea,<cr>2</cr> and said:<pb/><poetry>“With such violence <indent>the great city<cr>3</cr> of Babylon will be thrown down,</indent> <indent>never to be found again.</indent>

The music of harpists and musicians, pipers and trumpeters, <indent>will never be heard in you again.<cr>1</cr> </indent> No worker of any trade <indent>will ever be found in you again.</indent> The sound of a millstone <indent>will never be heard in you again.<cr>2</cr> </indent>

Revelation 18:22

The light of a lamp <indent>will never shine in you again.</indent> The voice of bridegroom and bride <indent>will never be heard in you again.<cr>1</cr> </indent> Your merchants were the world’s important people.<cr>2</cr> <indent>By your magic spell<cr>3</cr> all the nations were led astray.</indent>

Revelation 18:23

In her was found the blood of prophets and of God’s holy people,<cr>1</cr> <indent>of all who have been slaughtered on the earth.”<cr>2</cr> </indent>

Threefold Hallelujah Over Babylon’s Fall

Revelation 19:1

After this I heard what sounded like the roar of a great multitude<cr>1</cr> in heaven shouting:<pb/><poetry>“Hallelujah!<cr>2</cr> Salvation<cr>3</cr> and glory and power<cr>4</cr> belong to our God,

for true and just are his judgments.<cr>1</cr> </indent> He has condemned the great prostitute<cr>2</cr> <indent>who corrupted the earth by her adulteries.</indent> He has avenged on her the blood of his servants.”<cr>3</cr>

Revelation 19:2

And again they shouted:<pb/><poetry>“Hallelujah!<cr>1</cr> The smoke from her goes up for ever and ever.”<cr>2</cr> </poetry>

The twenty-four elders<cr>1</cr> and the four living creatures<cr>2</cr> fell down<cr>3</cr> and worshiped God, who was seated on the throne. And they cried:<pb/><poetry>“Amen, Hallelujah!”<cr>4</cr> </poetry>

Fine linen,<cr>1</cr> bright and clean, <indent>was given her to wear.”</indent><pb/>(Fine linen stands for the righteous acts<cr>2</cr> of God’s holy people.)

Revelation 19:8

Then the angel said to me,<cr>1</cr> “Write this:<cr>2</cr> Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb!”<cr>3</cr> And he added, “These are the true words of God.”<cr>4</cr>

Revelation 19:9

At this I fell at his feet to worship him.<cr>1</cr> But he said to me, “Don’t do that! I am a fellow servant with you and with your brothers and sisters who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God!<cr>2</cr> For it is the Spirit of prophecy who bears testimony to Jesus.”<cr>3</cr>

I saw heaven standing open<cr>1</cr> and there before me was a white horse, whose rider<cr>2</cr> is called Faithful and True.<cr>3</cr> With justice he judges and wages war.<cr>4</cr>

His eyes are like blazing fire,<cr>1</cr> and on his head are many crowns.<cr>2</cr> He has a name written on him<cr>3</cr> that no one knows but he himself.<cr>4</cr>

Revelation 19:12

He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood,<cr>1</cr> and his name is the Word of God.<cr>2</cr>

The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen,<cr>1</cr> white<cr>2</cr> and clean.

Revelation 19:14

Coming out of his mouth is a sharp sword<cr>1</cr> with which to strike down<cr>2</cr> the nations. “He will rule them with an iron scepter.”<ft>1</ft><cr>3</cr> He treads the winepress<cr>4</cr> of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty.

Revelation 19:15

On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written:<cr>1</cr> <pb/><center><smallCap>king of kings and lord of lords</smallCap>.<cr>2</cr> </center>

Revelation 19:16

And I saw an angel standing in the sun, who cried in a loud voice to all the birds<cr>1</cr> flying in midair,<cr>2</cr> “Come,<cr>3</cr> gather together for the great supper of God,<cr>4</cr>

But the beast was captured, and with it the false prophet<cr>1</cr> who had performed the signs<cr>2</cr> on its behalf.<cr>3</cr> With these signs he had deluded<cr>4</cr> those who had received the mark of the beast<cr>5</cr> and worshiped its image.<cr>6</cr> The two of them were thrown alive into the fiery lake<cr>7</cr> of burning sulfur.<cr>8</cr>

Woe to you, great city,   you mighty city of Babylon! In one hour   your doom has come!’ 11 “The merchants   of the earth will weep and mourn   over her because no one buys their cargoes anymore  — 12 cargoes of gold, silver, precious stones and pearls; fine linen, purple, silk and scarlet cloth; every sort of citron wood, and articles of every kind made of ivory, costly wood, bronze, iron and marble;   13 cargoes of cinnamon and spice, of incense, myrrh and frankincense, of wine and olive oil, of fine flour and wheat; cattle and sheep; horses and carriages; and human beings sold as slaves.   14 “They will say, ‘The fruit you longed for is gone from you. All your luxury and splendor have vanished, never to be recovered.’ 15 The merchants who sold these things and gained their wealth from her   will stand far off,   terrified at her torment. They will weep and mourn   16 and cry out: “‘Woe! Woe to you, great city,   dressed in fine linen, purple and scarlet, and glittering with gold, precious stones and pearls!    17 In one hour   such great wealth has been brought to ruin!’   “Every sea captain, and all who travel by ship, the sailors, and all who earn their living from the sea,   will stand far off.   18 When they see the smoke of her burning,   they will exclaim, ‘Was there ever a city like this great city  ?’   19 They will throw dust on their heads,   and with weeping and mourning   cry out: “‘Woe! Woe to you, great city,   where all who had ships on the sea became rich through her wealth! In one hour she has been brought to ruin!’    20 “Rejoice over her, you heavens!   Rejoice, you people of God! Rejoice, apostles and prophets! For God has judged her with the judgment she imposed on you.”   21 Then a mighty angel   picked up a boulder the size of a large millstone and threw it into the sea,   and said: “With such violence the great city   of Babylon will be thrown down, never to be found again.  22 The music of harpists and musicians, pipers and trumpeters, will never be heard in you again.   No worker of any trade will ever be found in you again. The sound of a millstone will never be heard in you again.    23 The light of a lamp will never shine in you again. The voice of bridegroom and bride will never be heard in you again.   Your merchants were the world’s important people.   By your magic spell   all the nations were led astray.  24 In her was found the blood of prophets and of God’s holy people,   of all who have been slaughtered on the earth.”   1 After this I heard what sounded like the roar of a great multitude   in heaven shouting: “Hallelujah!   Salvation   and glory and power   belong to our God,  2     for true and just are his judgments.   He has condemned the great prostitute   who corrupted the earth by her adulteries. He has avenged on her the blood of his servants.”   3 And again they shouted: “Hallelujah!   The smoke from her goes up for ever and ever.”   4 The twenty-four elders   and the four living creatures   fell down   and worshiped God, who was seated on the throne. And they cried: “Amen, Hallelujah!”   5 Then a voice came from the throne, saying: “Praise our God, all you his servants,   you who fear him, both great and small!”   6 Then I heard what sounded like a great multitude,   like the roar of rushing waters   and like loud peals of thunder, shouting: “Hallelujah! But he said to me, “Don’t do that! I am a fellow servant with you and with your brothers and sisters who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God!   For it is the Spirit of prophecy who bears testimony to Jesus.”   11 I saw heaven standing open   and there before me was a white horse, whose rider   is called Faithful and True.   With justice he judges and wages war.   12 His eyes are like blazing fire,   and on his head are many crowns.   He has a name written on him   that no one knows but he himself.   13 He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood,   and his name is the Word of God.   14 The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen,   white   and clean. 15 Coming out of his mouth is a sharp sword   with which to strike down   the nations. “He will rule them with an iron scepter.”    He treads the winepress   of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. 16 On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written:   king of kings and lord of lords.   17 And I saw an angel standing in the sun, who cried in a loud voice to all the birds   flying in midair,   “Come,   gather together for the great supper of God,   18 so that you may eat the flesh of kings, generals, and the mighty, of horses and their riders, and the flesh of all people,   free and slave,   great and small.”   19 Then I saw the beast   and the kings of the earth   and their armies gathered together to wage war against the rider on the horse   and his army. 20 But the beast was captured, and with it the false prophet   who had performed the signs   on its behalf.   With these signs he had deluded   those who had received the mark of the beast   and worshiped its image.   The two of them were thrown alive into the fiery lake   of burning sulfur.   21 The rest were killed with the sword   coming out of the mouth of the rider on the horse,   and all the birds   gorged themselves on their flesh.
