<h3>A Basket of Ripe Fruit</h3>8 This is what the Sovereign Lord showed me: a basket of ripe fruit. 2 “What do you see, Amos? ” he asked.“A basket of ripe fruit,” I answered.Then the Lord said to me, “The time is ripe for my people Israel; I will spare them no longer. 3 “In that day,” declares the Sovereign Lord, “the songs in the temple will turn to wailing. Many, many bodies—flung everywhere! Silence! ”<poetry> 4 <poetry>Hear this, you who trample the needy <indent>and do away with the poor of the land, </indent></poetry> 5 saying,<poetry>“When will the New Moon be over <indent>that we may sell grain,</indent> and the Sabbath be ended <indent>that we may market wheat?” —</indent> skimping on the measure, <indent>boosting the price</indent> <indent>and cheating with dishonest scales, </indent> 6 <poetry>buying the poor with silver <indent>and the needy for a pair of sandals,</indent> <indent>selling even the sweepings with the wheat. </indent></poetry> 7 The Lord has sworn by himself, the Pride of Jacob: “I will never forget anything they have done. <poetry> 8 <poetry>“Will not the land tremble for this, <indent>and all who live in it mourn?</indent> The whole land will rise like the Nile; <indent>it will be stirred up and then sink</indent> <indent>like the river of Egypt. </indent></poetry> 9 “In that day,” declares the Sovereign Lord,<poetry>“I will make the sun go down at noon <indent>and darken the earth in broad daylight. </indent> 10 <poetry>I will turn your religious festivals into mourning <indent>and all your singing into weeping. </indent> I will make all of you wear sackcloth <indent>and shave your heads.</indent> I will make that time like mourning for an only son <indent>and the end of it like a bitter day. </indent><poetry></poetry> 11 <poetry>“The days are coming,” declares the Sovereign <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>, <indent>“when I will send a famine through the land—</indent> not a famine of food or a thirst for water, <indent>but a famine of hearing the words of the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>. </indent> </poetry> 12 <poetry>People will stagger from sea to sea <indent>and wander from north to east,</indent> searching for the word of the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>, <indent>but they will not find it. </indent></poetry> 13 “In that day<poetry>“the lovely young women and strong young men <indent>will faint because of thirst. </indent> 14 <poetry>Those who swear by the sin of Samaria — <indent>who say, ‘As surely as your god lives, Dan,’ </indent> <indent>or, ‘As surely as the god of Beersheba lives’—</indent> <indent>they will fall, never to rise again. ”</indent></poetry>

Amos 8:1
