<h3>Job Speaks</h3>3 After this, Job opened his mouth and cursed the day of his birth. 2 He said:<poetry> 3 <poetry>“May the day of my birth perish, <indent>and the night that said, ‘A boy is conceived!’ </indent> </poetry> 4 <poetry>That day—may it turn to darkness; <indent>may God above not care about it;</indent> <indent>may no light shine on it.</indent> </poetry> 5 <poetry>May gloom and utter darkness claim it once more; <indent>may a cloud settle over it;</indent> <indent>may blackness overwhelm it.</indent> </poetry> 6 <poetry>That night—may thick darkness seize it; <indent>may it not be included among the days of the year</indent> <indent>nor be entered in any of the months.</indent> </poetry> 7 <poetry>May that night be barren; <indent>may no shout of joy be heard in it.</indent> </poetry> 8 <poetry>May those who curse days curse that day, <indent>those who are ready to rouse Leviathan. </indent> </poetry> 9 <poetry>May its morning stars become dark; <indent>may it wait for daylight in vain</indent> <indent>and not see the first rays of dawn, </indent> </poetry> 10 <poetry>for it did not shut the doors of the womb on me <indent>to hide trouble from my eyes.</indent><poetry></poetry> 11 <poetry>“Why did I not perish at birth, <indent>and die as I came from the womb? </indent> </poetry> 12 <poetry>Why were there knees to receive me <indent>and breasts that I might be nursed?</indent> </poetry> 13 <poetry>For now I would be lying down in peace; <indent>I would be asleep and at rest </indent> </poetry> 14 <poetry>with kings and rulers of the earth, <indent>who built for themselves places now lying in ruins, </indent> </poetry> 15 <poetry>with princes who had gold, <indent>who filled their houses with silver. </indent> </poetry> 16 <poetry>Or why was I not hidden away in the ground like a stillborn child, <indent>like an infant who never saw the light of day? </indent> </poetry> 17 <poetry>There the wicked cease from turmoil, <indent>and there the weary are at rest. </indent> </poetry> 18 <poetry>Captives also enjoy their ease; <indent>they no longer hear the slave driver’s shout. </indent> </poetry> 19 <poetry>The small and the great are there, <indent>and the slaves are freed from their owners.</indent><poetry></poetry> 20 <poetry>“Why is light given to those in misery, <indent>and life to the bitter of soul, </indent> </poetry> 21 <poetry>to those who long for death that does not come, <indent>who search for it more than for hidden treasure, </indent> </poetry> 22 <poetry>who are filled with gladness <indent>and rejoice when they reach the grave? </indent> </poetry> 23 <poetry>Why is life given to a man <indent>whose way is hidden, </indent> <indent>whom God has hedged in? </indent> </poetry> 24 <poetry>For sighing has become my daily food; <indent>my groans pour out like water. </indent> </poetry> 25 <poetry>What I feared has come upon me; <indent>what I dreaded has happened to me. </indent> </poetry> 26 <poetry>I have no peace, no quietness; <indent>I have no rest, but only turmoil.” </indent></poetry>
