Favell Lee Mortimer (1802 - 1878) was born in London, England. She was one of eight children born to a deeply pious mother, and one of the co-founders of Barclay's bank.

Favell was put in charge of the religious education of her siblings. She came up with a method for teaching them to read based on using phonetics and flashcards, a novel method at the time.

The substance of her teaching methods were published as a book entitled 'The Peep of the Day'. The book quickly became a a best seller, selling over half a million copies. Her methods were known for their harshness, as she emphasized the need to talk to children about terrors of hell if they rejected salvation.

In 1841 she married Rev. Thomas Mortimer, the minister of an Episcopal Church in London. The marriage did not bear children but they adapted a son in 1848. In 1850 her husband died. She spent her remaining years helping with orphanages and traveling.
