Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Hosea 9:5

‘What will you do in the day of solemn assembly, And in the day of the feast of YHWH?’ As there would be no offerings and sacrifices, what would they do on the day of solemn assembly, when, had they been at home, they would have gathered to worship and offer sacrifices? And what especially would they do when the feast of YHWH came around? (For the phrase ‘the feast of YHWH’ see Leviticus 23:39). They would not only have lost their land, but also things that were at the very centre of their... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Hosea 9:6

‘Their pleasant things of silver, Nettles will possess them, Thorns will be in their tents.’ The consequence for them would be that their rich houses with their silver trimmings would become the haunt of nettles, and their colourful tents which they would have left behind as they were snatched away by the enemy, would be invaded by thorns. read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Hosea 9:7

‘The days of visitation are come, The days of recompense are come, Israel will know it, the prophet is a fool, The man who has the spirit is mad, For the abundance of your iniquity, And because the enmity is great.’ For what they would now face would not be ‘days of assembly’ and ‘days of YHWH’s feasts’. They would rather be ‘days of visitation’ by an angry God, and ‘days of recompense’ for their sins. The plural of ‘days’ indicates that it was to be no short judgment. And then Israel will know... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Hosea 9:8

‘Is Ephraim a watchman? Are the people of my God a prophet? A fowler’s snare is in all his ways, Enmity in the house of his God.’ Hosea then sarcastically asks the people whether they thought that they were YHWH’s watchman, or considered themselves to be YHWH’s prophet? And if not why did they think that what they were holding on to was the truth? Far from that being so, in all the ways in which they went they were in fact being trapped like ‘silly doves’ in a fowler’s snare (compare Hosea... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Hosea 9:9

They have deeply corrupted themselves, ‘As in the days of Gibeah, He will remember their iniquity, He will visit their sins.’ For YHWH’s charge against Israel was that their sins were as deep as the sins of Gibeah, which had also had sexual motivation and had been of the most despicable kind (see Judges 19:22 ff). They had deeply corrupted themselves. And just as He had taken note of the sins of Gibeah, which had almost resulted in the extinction of one of the tribes of Israel, so He would... read more

Hosea 9:1-1 Samuel : . The Joyless Discipline of Exile.— The delirious joy of the popular nature-religion shall soon be exchanged for the sorrows of exile. In her own land Israel had treacherously ascribed to the Baalim the crops given by Yahweh; therefore, in a strange land, she shall lose all opportunity of sacrificing to Him. Their bread shall be “ as the bread of mourners,” unoffered and unconsecrated in Yahweh’ s Temple; and what will they do for festivals? Egypt shall be their grave,... read more

Think with yourselves what you are likely to do then: on those days you were wont to cease from your labours, to offer sacrifices to God, (as you thought and said,) to feast with one another, all was full of seeming religion and real feasting and jollity on those days in your own country; but will your hard masters, that love their own profit, that hate your persons, and despise your religion, will they lose your labour, indulge your ease, encourage your religion, and suffer you to exercise it?... read more

For, lo; mark it well, and observe the event. They are gone because of destruction; some of the wary and timorous are already withdrawn from the desolation that cometh on their country, and more will flee from the Assyrian invader; and it is very near, and very uncertain, expressed therefore in the perfect tense. Egypt shall gather them up; in Egypt they hope to be quiet, and survive these desolations, and to return into their own land; but they shall die in Egypt, and Egyptians shall lay them... read more

The days of visitation are come, the days of recompence are come: the prophet doubleth the same thing, both to confirm the certainty of it, and to awaken the stupid Israelites: the days of God’s just displeasure, in which he will punish, and render to these incorrigible idolaters and abominable debauchees as their wickedness deserveth, are come, they are very near, within four years at most. Israel shall know it; Israel will not believe it, though God hath often told them of it, but when it is... read more

Matthew Poole's English Annotations on the Holy Bible - Hosea 9:8

The watchman of Ephraim was with my God; the old true prophets indeed were with God, heard what he spake, and told it to the people; they were for God, for his honour, law, worship, and temple; and so should prophets now be. Ephraim once had such prophets, such were Elijah and Elisha, but none such now, or Ephraim cares not for them. The prophet speaks of God, the true God, as his God, in opposition to idols, on which Ephraim doted now, whose pretended oracles they believed. But the prophet;... read more
