Lange's Commentary on the Holy Scriptures: Critical, Doctrinal and Homiletical - Romans 11:1-36

Third Section.—The final gracious solution of the enigma, or the overruling of judgment for the salvation of Israel. God’s judgment on Israel is not one of reprobation. God’s saving economy in His Providence over Jews and Gentiles, over the election and the great majority of Israel, and over the concatenation of judgment and salvation, by virtue of which all Israel shall finally attain to faith and salvation through the fulness of the Gentiles. The universality of judgment and mercy.... read more

F.B. Meyer's 'Through the Bible' Commentary - Romans 11:13-24

Others Grafted in by Faith Romans 11:13-24 Paul never abandoned the hope that ultimately Israel would come back to God in Christ. He believed that God’s promises pointed in that direction, and that, though centuries might pass, those sure guarantees would be abundantly fulfilled. Notice his expressions: how much more their fullness, Romans 11:12 ; what shall the receiving of them be, but from the dead? Romans 11:15 ; God is able to graft them in again, Romans 11:23 ; all Israel shall be... read more

F.B. Meyer's 'Through the Bible' Commentary - Romans 11:25-36

That God “Might Have Mercy upon All” Romans 11:25-36 “Mysteries” are the reasons and principles of the divine procedure which are hidden from ordinary minds, but revealed to the children of God by the Spirit, who searches the deep things, 1 Corinthians 2:10 . We cannot tell how near the brim we are, or when the fullness of the Gentiles will fill the predestined measure. It may be much nearer than we suppose, and then the door will be closed, and the Hebrew nation will be grafted in to serve... read more

G. Campbell Morgan's Exposition on the Whole Bible - Romans 11:1-36

This discussion now gives rise to a new question, "Did God cast off His people?" They were created a nation in order that through them all the nations should be blessed. Failing to realize the divine intention concerning their own national life, they consequently and necessarily failed to fulfil that intention concerning the nations outside. God, however, does not allow the outside nations to suffer, but in infinite grace works through the fall of His earthly people toward enriching the whole... read more

Wells of Living Water Commentary - Romans 11:15-28

Missions in the Epistles Romans 10:11-15 ; Romans 11:15-28 INTRODUCTORY WORDS This study as a whole will give some idea of the missionary vision as set forth in Paul's Epistles. 1. The scope of missionary endeavor. Romans 10:11 reads: "Whosoever believeth on Him shall not be ashamed." Here is a "whosoever" just as deep and broad as the "whosoever" in John 3:16 . In John it says, "That whosoever believeth in Him should not perish," and here it says, " Whosoever believeth on Him shall not... read more

James Nisbet

James Nisbet's Church Pulpit Commentary - Romans 11:20

STANDING BY FAITH‘Thou standest by faith.’ Romans 11:20 All who ‘stand,’ ‘stand’ through mercy. There is no place where any one may ever judge or condemn a fallen brother. For if there is no ‘charity,’ there is no ‘faith’—for he who fell, fell from lack of ‘faith’; if you condemn another, you have no ‘charity,’ and therefore you have no ‘faith’; and if you have no ‘faith,’ you will not ‘stand.’ Every one that ever fell may trace his fall back, primarily, to the want of the realisation of the... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Romans 11:1-36

The Messsiah Has Come And Is For All. God Has Not Failed In His Promises To The True Israel. Salvation For All is Through Faith In The Messiah (9:1-11:36) Paul now expands on chapters 1-8, in which he has demonstrated that all, both Jews and Gentiles, have sinned, and that all must therefore find salvation by faith through Jesus Christ, God’s Messiah. And he does it by 1). demonstrating the relationship of both Jews and Gentiles to the Messiah Who has come, and 2). showing that Salvation is... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Romans 11:11-32

God Has Established A True Israel Based On The Remnant Who Have Responded To The Messiah, With The False Israel Being At Least Temporarily Cast Off, To Be Restored If They Turn To The Messiah And Rejoin The True Israel (11:11-32). We now commence with a new subsection, commencing as so often in Romans with a question, although one that continues the theme of Romans 11:8-10. In it we have the clearest evidence of the fact that the ‘true church’, consisting of all true believers, is the... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Romans 11:13-24

The Illustration Of The Olive Tree (11:13-24). ‘The Olive Tree’ is the name of Israel specifically given to it by God. In Jeremiah we are told “YHWH called your name ‘a green olive tree’, fair, with goodly fruit” (Jeremiah 11:16). The formula ‘YHWH called your name’ is significant. It is the one used concerning YHWH’s naming of Adam as the representative of mankind (Genesis 5:2). Thus it is indicating the official pronouncement of a permanent reality. Mankind was called ‘Man’ by God. Israel is... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Romans 11:18

‘Do not glory over the branches. But if you do glory, it is not you who bears the root, but the root you.’ The assumption here might be that Gentile Christians in Rome have been gloating over the situation as regards unbelieving Israel. It may, however, simply be that Paul foresees the danger of that happening (having seen it elsewhere) and is simply trying to prevent it. But that there were differences between Jewish and Gentile Christians in Rome comes out in chapters 14-15. Whichever way it... read more
