Wells of Living Water Commentary - 1 Corinthians 1:1-10

The Carnal Christian 1 Corinthians 1:1-10 INTRODUCTORY WORDS We will consider the opening 9 verses of the first chapter of I Corinthians. These verses give us plainly an eightfold standing which we have in Christ Jesus. 1. All Christians are sanctified Christians. Paul thus addresses the saints at Corinth: "To them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus." Sanctification has a twofold setting. First of all, there is a sanctification which is ours in Christ, and secondly, there is the... read more

Wells of Living Water Commentary - 1 Corinthians 1:1-30

The Church of God at Corinth 1 Corinthians 1:1-30 INTRODUCTORY WORDS We propose taking several studies from the First Epistle to the Corinthians. There will be much to consider here which should help in the time of need. The introductory words of the First Epistle to the Corinthians are most suggestive. We cull certain things for your concentration, 1. "Paul" here is a word that, in itself, means much. Paul was formerly known as Saul of Tarsus. After he led one, Paulus, to Christ he seems to... read more

James Nisbet's Church Pulpit Commentary - 1 Corinthians 1:4-8

THE TESTIMONY OF CHRIST CONFIRMED‘I thank my God always on your behalf, for the grace of God which is given you by Jesus Christ; that in every thing ye are enriched by Him, in all utterance, and in all knowledge; even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you: so that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ: who shall also confirm you unto the end.’ 1 Corinthians 1:4-Ruth : The testimony of Christ, the evidence, that is, that the Corinthian Christians... read more

James Nisbet's Church Pulpit Commentary - 1 Corinthians 1:6

THE WITNESS CONCERNING CHRIST‘The testimony of Christ was confirmed in you.’ 1 Corinthians 1:6 Christianity means, first of all, the testimony of Christ; that is to say, the witness concerning Christ. Now this is what the great Apostle urges over and over again. He is always urging it. He presents himself everywhere to men as a witness for the Person of Christ. I. The message which he brings is first and foremost a testimony concerning Him.—And this was something wholly new in the history of... read more

James Nisbet's Church Pulpit Commentary - 1 Corinthians 1:8

UNTO THE END‘Who shall also confirm you unto the end, that ye may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.’ 1 Corinthians 1:8 Weak faith, weak love, weak resolves, weak prayer, a weak watch, these are the roots of almost all which we have most to regret in life. Therefore, the great question is, What are the strengtheners of this great scheme of religion? It might be expected that there would be a resemblance between what strengthens the natural and physical life, and what strengthens... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - 1 Corinthians 1:1-2

‘Paul, called to be an Apostle of Jesus Christ, through the will of God, and Sosthenes our brother, to the church of God which is at Corinth.’ Paul speaks like this in almost all the introductions to his Epistles, with a view to emphasising the divine authority with which he writes. Firstly he states that he is ‘called to be an Apostle of Jesus Christ’. Then he states that it is ‘through the will of God’. ‘Called to be an Apostle of Jesus Christ.’ Notice first the emphasis on his ‘calling’. It... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - 1 Corinthians 1:2

‘Sanctified in Christ Jesus, called sanctified ones (saints) with all those who call on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ in every place, theirs and ours.’ ‘Sanctified in Christ Jesus.’ The tense of the verse is perfect passive signifying something done in the past the benefit of which continues into the present, thus literally ‘have been and therefore are sanctified’. It is noteworthy that the members of this church, with all their failings, are described by Paul as ‘sanctified in Christ... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - 1 Corinthians 1:3

‘Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.’ ‘Grace’ and ‘peace’ were the two terms used in greetings in Paul’s world, the former by Gentiles the latter by Jews. But Paul, while taking them over, imbues them with new meaning. It is noteworthy that with him ‘grace’ always precedes ‘peace’, for peace results from God’s ‘freely shown favour’. ‘Grace to you.’ Nothing can be more desirable than to have God looking on us and acting towards us in undeserved love and favour,... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - 1 Corinthians 1:4-7

‘ I thank God always concerning you for the grace of God which was given to you in Christ Jesus, that in everything you were enriched in him, in all utterance and in all knowledge, even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you, so that you came behind in no gift, waiting for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ.’ Paul now instances how greatly God’s grace has already been revealed towards them, and wishes them to know that he continually thanks God on their behalf because of it. Thus... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - 1 Corinthians 1:8-9

‘Who will also confirm you to the end, unreproveable in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful through whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.’ Note here the promise that they will experience this because they will be ‘confirmed’ to the end (bebaioo). This verb is used as a legal term to indicate guaranteeing security. It is used in Hebrews 13:9 of those whose hearts are strengthened (confirmed) by grace. And Who is the One who will confirm us to... read more
