Arthur Peake's Commentary on the Bible - Matthew 26:26-29

Matthew 26:26-Joel : . The Bread and the Wine ( Mark 14:22-Lamentations : *: Luke 22:17-Proverbs : has a different arrangement).— Mt. is practically identical with Mk., but adds ( Matthew 26:28) that the “ blood of the covenant which is shed for many” is “ unto remission of sins” ( cf. Mark 10:45, Hebrews 9:22), and that when Jesus drinks the new wine in His Father’ s Kingdom (Mt. “ kingdom of heaven,” Lk. “ kingdom of God” ) it will be with the disciples. read more

Matthew 26:30-Habakkuk : . Prediction of the Disciples’ Desertion ( Mark 14:26-Obadiah : *).— In Lk. ( Luke 22:31-Nahum :) the prediction is confined to Peter. Note in Mt.’ s narrative ( a) the disaster is to be “ this night,” ( Matthew 26:31), ( b) one cockcrow, ( c) the omission of Peter’ s “ exceeding vehement” denial. read more

Matthew Poole's English Annotations on the Holy Bible - Matthew 26:17-19

No one of the evangelists relates this history fully, but Mark relates the former part more fully than Matthew: Mark 14:12-16 And the first day of unleavened bread, when they killed the passover, his disciples said unto him, Where wilt thou that we go and prepare that thou mayest eat the passover? And he sendet forth two of his disciples, and saith unto them, Go ye into the city, and there shall meet you a man bearing a pitcher of water: follow him. And wheresoever he shall go in, say you to... read more

Mark hath the same, Mark 14:17-21; And in the evening he cometh with the twelve. And as they sat and did eat, Jesus said, Verily I say unto you, one of you which eateth with me shall betray me. And they began to be sorrowful, and to say unto him one by one, Is it I? And he answered and said unto them, It is one of the twelve, that dippeth with me in the dish. The Son of man indeed goeth as it is written of him: but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! Good were it for that man if... read more

Matthew Poole's English Annotations on the Holy Bible - Matthew 26:26-30

Mark relates this with no considerable difference, Mark 14:22-26; only he saith, they all drank of it, and, shed for many for the remission of sins. Luke saith, our Saviour upon his giving the bread, said, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you. Luke 22:24-30 gives us some further discourses of our Saviour with Peter, and to his disciples; but no other... read more

Mark hath the same, Mark 14:27-31, only he saith, Mark 14:30, This day, even in this night, before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice. Luke hath it not entire, but he hath something of it, Luke 22:31-34, with some addition, thus, And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith may not fail: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren. And he said unto him, Lord, I am ready to... read more

Preacher's Complete Homiletical Commentary - Matthew 26:14-25

CRITICAL NOTESMatthew 26:15. Covenanted with him.—Weighed unto him (R.V.). After the old custom. There had been in the land a coined shekel since the time of Simeon, 143 B.C.; but weighing seems to have still been customary in the temple treasury (Meyer). Or “weighed” may be simply equivalent to “paid.” Thirty pieces of silver.—I.e. thirty silver shekels. G. C. Williamson, D.Lit., in “The Money of the Bible,” says, “In the time of our Lord there were no shekels current (save, perhaps, a few of... read more

Preacher's Complete Homiletical Commentary - Matthew 26:26-30

CRITICAL NOTESMatthew 26:28. New.—Omitted in R.V., on the authority of the best MSS. Testament.—Covenant (R.V.). The term διαθήκη is here of peculiar importance. It does not mean either a covenant in the sense of contract or agreement, or a testament in the sense of a will, but it has a meaning which combines ideas distinctive of both. In διαθήκη there are the conditional elements necessary to a covenant, and the absolute elements necessary to a testament: the first, so far as it denotes... read more

Preacher's Complete Homiletical Commentary - Matthew 26:31-35

CRITICAL NOTESMatthew 26:32. I will go before you.—As a shepherd. A pastoral expression (Bengel). See preceding verse.Matthew 26:34. Before the cook crow.—The crowing of cocks during the stillness of the night is quite a feature in Oriental life, and nowhere more so than in and around Jerusalem. The great time for cock-crowing was, and is, in the third watch of the night. Sermon Bible Commentary - Matthew 26:22

Matthew 26:22 , Matthew 26:25 (with John 13:25 ) I. In the first form of the question: "Is it I?" we have an example of that wholesome self-distrust, which a glimpse into the possibilities of evil that lie slumbering in all our hearts ought to teach every one of us. Every man is a mystery to himself. In every soul there lie, coiled and dormant, hybernating snakes evils that a very slight rise in the temperature will wake up into poisonous activity. And let no man say, in foolish... read more
