Scripture Reading 
Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and curing every disease and every sickness. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” 
Then Jesus summoned his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to cure every disease and every sickness. 
These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: As you go, proclaim the good news, ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’ Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. You received without payment; give without payment. 
 
Reflection 
As Jesus sends his apostles out to preach the good news, he gives them a list of instructions. Among them is this one: “You received without payment; give without payment.” Or, as another translation reads, “Freely you have received; freely give.” Whatever Jesus had given the apostles had been without cost; consequently, they were not to expect remuneration from others. They were to serve without greed and without guile, showing that their only interest was proclaiming the kingdom of God, not material gain. 
 
His accompanying instructions not to carry more than the bare minimum for their journeys suggested how much Jesus valued a “poverty of spirit.” “Blessed are the poor in spirit, he said in his sermon on the mount, “for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:3). This is because those who are “poor in spirit” depend on God for their every need, and this keeps them rooted in him. This is why there is wonderment when one hears of Christian spiritual leaders demanding enormous fees for services rendered or asking to be paid in return for prayers. 
 
But Jesus then says that “the worker deserves his wages” (Matthew 10:10). Isn’t he contradicting himself? No, because although the worker was not to expect anything from the people he was serving, the people being served had a duty toward the worker serving them. They had to take care of him and his needs. Paul quotes what Jesus says in his letter to Timothy, advising him that the church needs to look after its pastors (see 1 Timothy 5:17-18). However, we often fail to realize this, believing that whatever we get should be free, without giving a thought to the needs of those we get it from! 
 
So, there is a message here for both the server and the served that both should pay heed to. The former should serve without expectation of material reward. This doesn’t mean they should lead destitute lives; it just means they should remain detached from material goods and creature comforts. As for the latter, they should ensure that God’s workers are provided for because without them, there would be nobody to preach the good news. 
 
And that spells very bad news for the people of this world.

December 5, 2020 - Freely Give! - A Reflection on Matthew 9:35-10:1, 5-8

As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed him, crying loudly, “Have mercy on us, Son of David!” When he entered the house, the blind men came to him; and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They said to him, “Yes, Lord.” Then he touched their eyes and said, “According to your faith let it be done to you.” And their eyes were opened. Then Jesus sternly ordered them, “See that no one knows of this.” But they went away and spread the news about him throughout that district. 
 
Reflection 
Today’s passage tells the story of two blind me who followed Jesus crying loudly, “Have mercy on us, Son of David!” We don’t know why Jesus ignored them until he got off the street, but when they came to him inside the house, he asked the second of his standard two questions. The first question he always asked was: “Do you want to be healed?” The second was: “Do you believe I can heal you?” Unsurprisingly, because he had just brought a dead girl back to life, they both answer, “Yes, Lord.” And he heals them. 
 
What caused their blindness? Again, we don’t know because there are many reasons for physical blindness. It is the same when it comes to spiritual blindness too, but one of the most common reasons is the one suggested by Paul. He wrote: “The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God” (2 Corinthians 4:4). How does he do this? 
 
He does this in many ways. One, he feeds us the delusion that we are self-sufficient people: that we don’t need a religious crutch, let alone a savior. Two, he gets us chasing after money, fame, and power: distractions that take us far away from Jesus. Three, he sows confusion by setting up science and reason in opposition to faith — incidentally, they are not! — making it seem as though we had to make a choice between one or the other. So, how does one gain sight, which is a euphemism for salvation? 
 
First, we have to recognize we are blind, which is not easy, especially in a world where almost everybody is blind. This recognition usually follows a situation where one of those three things we just spoke about is challenged. Second, once we recognize we are blind, we have to make our way to the only person who can give us sight. And that, of course, is Jesus. There is salvation in no other name (see Acts 4:12). And third, we have to tell him to heal us, believing that he will. 
 
May all of us who are blind seek Jesus and see.

December 4, 2020 - Sight to the Blind - A Reflection on Matthew 9:27-31

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven. 
“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not act on them will be like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell—and great was its fall!” 
 
Reflection 
Whenever I read this, I am reminded of the fable about the Three Little Pigs. Do you know the story? Three pigs built houses for themselves. One makes it out of straw, another out of sticks, and the third out of bricks. A Big Bad Wolf comes, and he huffs, and he puffs, and he blows the first house down and gobbles up the pig. He does the same thing to the second house and the second pig. But he is unable to destroy the third pig’s house. And whenever I think of this fable, I am reminded of Peter’s advice to “be alert and sober at all times because our enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour” (see 1 Peter 5:8). 
 
I imagine the devil to be like the Big Bad Wolf, huffing and puffing trying to blow our houses down. And our houses, if not solid, will fall down, and he will devour us. So how do we make our houses strong? Paul tells us. In his first letter to the Corinthians, he writes (and I paraphrase): “By the grace of God, I laid a foundation as a wise builder. But everyone should build with care because you can’t lay a foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. One day this will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work” (cf. 1 Corinthians 3:10-15). 
 
Jesus has to be the foundation of our houses, which, of course, is a euphemism for our lives. Which means he has to be the Lord of our lives. It isn’t enough that we say, “Yes, Lord!” We have to do what he asks us to do. But unfortunately, we tend to be very selective about what we do, don’t we? If it suits us, we are only too happy to do what he asks us to do, but if it doesn’t, Jesus could take a hike. The danger is that WE might end up taking a hike to destinations we would rather not go to. 
 
As Jesus says, “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven.” And then he says this, although it is omitted from today’s reading. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’

December 3, 2020 - Wolf at the Door - A Reflection on Matthew 7:21, 24-27

After Jesus had left that place, he passed along the Sea of Galilee, and he went up the mountain, where he sat down. Great crowds came to him, bringing with them the lame, the maimed, the blind, the mute, and many others. They put them at his feet, and he cured them, so that the crowd was amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the maimed whole, the lame walking, and the blind seeing. And they praised the God of Israel. 
Then Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I have compassion for the crowd, because they have been with me now for three days and have nothing to eat; and I do not want to send them away hungry, for they might faint on the way.” The disciples said to him, “Where are we to get enough bread in the desert to feed so great a crowd?” Jesus asked them, “How many loaves have you?” They said, “Seven, and a few small fish.” Then ordering the crowd to sit down on the ground, he took the seven loaves and the fish; and after giving thanks he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. And all of them ate and were filled; and they took up the broken pieces left over, seven baskets full. 
 
Reflection 
I know that every now and then, especially during great struggles, we feel that God doesn’t care. If you are feeling like that now, today’s reflection is for you. We see Jesus cares for our needs. He has compassion for our spiritual needs, which are eternal in their consequences. This is why Jesus preached as he did to the thousands in this story. He also had compassion for our physical needs, which are lifelong in their consequences. This is why he healed everybody who was sick. And he even cares about our need for sustenance, which is why he thought of feeding them after preaching and ministering to the crowds. 
 
There are quite a few lessons to be learned from what happens here, so let us reflect upon it. Jesus calls his disciples to him and says, I have compassion for the crowd because they have been with me now for three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, for they might faint on the way.” Why is he telling them this? He obviously does not need their advice, so his reasons had to be something else. What? Could it be that he wanted to see if they would tell him that he could feed them miraculously, just like he was curing them miraculously? 
 
But they said, “How? There isn’t enough bread to feed so many.” One can almost sense Jesus’ disappointment. After all the time they had spent with Jesus and all the miracles they had seen him work, including feeding people miraculously on another occasion, they were still thinking “naturally” not “supernaturally.” But Jesus tries again. “So how much bread DO you have?” he asks. “Just seven loaves,” they say, “and a few fish.” One imagines him waiting for a moment, hoping they will remember how he had multiplied bread and fish not too long before, but they don’t. So he sighs and works his miracle again. 
 
What do we learn from this? We learn that we shouldn’t forget what God does for us because as long as we keep forgetting, we will never grow in faith. God is present in our lives ALL the time, especially during our struggles. Unfortunately, we don’t seem to realize this, which is why we begin to despair and doubt, and our faith weakens. Going forward, let us remember that God is with us and that there is nothing that he cannot do! 
 
And he cares enough to do it.

December 2, 2020 - A Compassionate God - A Reflection on Matthew 15:29-37

At that same hour Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, or who the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.” 
Then turning to the disciples, Jesus said to them privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see! For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, but did not see it, and to hear what you hear, but did not hear it.” 
 
Reflection 
Jesus loved little children, and I think this was because he found it very easy to talk to them. Innocent and unpretentious, children are easily teachable, unlike many adults who are so puffed up (I use the term with deliberation) with knowledge they believe they are smarter and wiser than everybody else. Consequently, they are unteachable. I think it is for this reason that Jesus called to him men who were “unschooled and ordinary” (see Acts 4:13) because they would be prepared to listen to what he had to say and learn what he had to teach. 
 
Being intelligent is not a bad thing, but it often gets in the way of discovering the truth. Being knowledgeable is not a bad thing either, but this too often makes one blind to something that should be obvious. One always has to be open to learning, open to looking at things from a different perspective, open to the realization that one does not and cannot know everything. People with knowledge stuffed in their heads are like glasses that are full of water. You can’t put in more water unless some of it is emptied out. Better, then, to start with a glass that is empty, no? 
 
This is one of the reasons why Jesus chose these twelve men to be his disciples. Their minds were like blank slates, ready to be written upon. And Jesus wrote his wonderful truths upon them, leading him to say, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see! For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, but did not see it, and to hear what you hear, but did not hear it.” He would say the same thing when the apostles asked him why he spoke to people in parables (see Matthew 13:1-33). 
 
Therefore, if we are to become wise in the ways of God, it is better to wipe our minds clean of whatever knowledge and ideas we might have written on it and let God write what he wishes on it afresh. However, we need to be aware that what God teaches us can fill the blackboard up pretty soon, again making us believe we know a lot, whereas we still don’t know much in truth. Therefore, every now and then, we need to take a duster to the blackboard of our minds, wipe it clean, and let God write afresh. 
 
And Jesus will say to us what he said to the apostles, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see ....”

December 1, 2020 (Tuesday) - A Blank Slate - A Reflection on Luke 10:21-24

Out of the twelve men that Jesus chose to be his apostles, seven are believed to be fisherman. Today we see him calling four of them: Peter, Andrew, James, and John. Although fishing might have been a dominant profession in first century Israel, the number of fishermen Jesus chose seems to be extremely disproportionate. Which leads to question: why? Well, perhaps it is because fisherman have the kind of qualities that he was looking for. What might these be? 
 
One quality is patience. Have you ever been fishing? Well, sometimes you can catch fish after fish in rapid succession; other times you can just stand there — or sit there — with a rod in your hand for hours on end without getting so much as a bite! You need a lot of patience to catch fish. You also need a lot of patience to catch men! Sometimes, at the end of a crusade you can have thousands of people accepting Jesus; other times you might not bring a soul to Christ for months on end. 
 
Another quality is persistence. On at least two occasions (that we know of) Peter and Andrew (we celebrate Andrew’s feast today) caught nothing (see Luke 5 and John 21). This is despite fishing all night. Can you imagine being at it all night and not catching a single fish. That speaks of patience, of course. But it also speaks of persistence because they kept at it until morning. Now Jesus bailed them out by giving them a catch so huge their nets began to break, but even if he hadn’t done this, they would have been out there again the following evening! We need this persistence to evangelize, sticking to the task day after day! 
 
A third quality is courage. Fishing by the side of a pond is a peaceful thing, but real fishing involves going out into deep waters. When a storm hits it can be traumatic. Again, we find the apostles caught in numerous storms, and some were so severe even these seasoned fishermen were terrified. But this didn’t stop them from fishing. We need to have courage as well, because we will be hit by storms too. Some of them might be big ones that threaten to destroy us. We should never be daunted. 
 
Patience. Perseverance. Courage. Like the apostles, we too are called to be fishers of men. These are the qualities we need to have. Happy fishing!

Daily Reflection with Aneel Aranha | Matthew 4:18-22 | November 30, 2020

William Scott was a Union Army soldier during the American Civil War. While on guard duty one night, Scott was found asleep at his post. He was subsequently court-martialed and sentenced to be executed. In Scott's defense, he had volunteered to take the place of a comrade the night before and was consequently exhausted. On the day he was to be executed, Abraham Lincoln issued a presidential pardon, sparing his life. Scott went on to serve faithfully until he was mortally wounded in battle a few years later. 
 
A soldier who falls asleep on guard duty can suffer severe consequences in every country, because there are lives that depend on his being awake and alert. We may not be soldiers in a nation’s military, but we are all soldiers for the Lord, in his service, and it is important that we be awake and alert too. Even if the lives of other people are not severely impacted by our state of wakefulness, our own lives most certainly are. Or, more accurately, our souls are! 
 
Whether we like it or not, we are in a war with the devil. “Our struggle,” as Paul writes to the Ephesians, “is against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” (see Ephesians 6:12). This war is being waged constantly, and any laxity or complacency on our part, leaves us vulnerable to his attacks. And, as I am sure we can all attest, these attacks can be severe, and if the enemy breaks through the defenses, it can be brutal. Hence the need for wakefulness! 
 
There is a tendency for us to become complacent, to take things easy, especially when we don’t see visible danger. But danger is always lurking. This is why Peter warns: “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8). And Jesus advises us of the same thing in today’s reading. “Beware!”, he says. “Keep alert! Stay awake!” But Jesus is not just warning us to beware of the enemy. He is telling us to be prepared for his return.

William Scott was a Union Army soldier during the American Civil War. While on guard duty one night, Scott was found asleep at his post. He was subsequently court-martialed and sentenced to be executed. In Scott's defense, he had volunteered to take the place of a comrade the night before and was consequently exhausted. On the day he was to be executed, Abraham Lincoln issued a presidential pardon, sparing his life. Scott went on to serve faithfully until he was mortally wounded in battle a few years later.

A soldier who falls asleep on guard duty can suffer severe consequences in every country, because there are lives that depend on his being awake and alert. We may not be soldiers in a nation’s military, but we are all soldiers for the Lord, in his service, and it is important that we be awake and alert too. Even if the lives of other people are not severely impacted by our state of wakefulness, our own lives most certainly are. Or, more accurately, our souls are!
