"And I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible."
A continued study of this section of verses, 6 - 13 and their impact on us today.
And I will punish the world for their evil - word study/phrase, "I will"; When we say we will do something, that is one thing; but when God says, "I will" it is an absolute truth. God cannot lie. What does God speak here in this verse? Three times God pronounces what is actions will be. This phrase, here is God saying He will punish. Who will He punish? God will punish the world, every lost sinner that chose to do evil rather than chose to do good.
Note the difference here between when God, as a Father to His children, the saints, punishes them by chastisement. A good parent will discipline their children to correct bad behavior. A neglectful parent will not discipline, thus the child's behavior continues, if not grow worse. But this phrase is not about a loving Father correcting His children. This punishment is a holy God, seeking to destroy the sinner's that have rejected Him, His Son and His ways. Holiness to maintain its state of holiness must remove from sin. If holiness is found in the presence of sin, then one of two things happens: 1. the holiness swallows the sin and makes it holy; as in the example of wretched sinners being saved from their sin and made holy. 2. The sin contaminates the holiness and holiness is no longer holy when sin has infected it. It erodes it nature as when rusts consumes iron/metal/steel. We chose which shall be, as Christians; either abiding in Him or abiding in sin and self. This determines our eternity by whether we be found in Him or not.
the same now is true of the world. 'all that is in the world is enemity against God'. They choose sin and embrace it, removing any chance of holiness. With no holiness one is not able to approach unto God. But rather, is consumed of God in His wrath. His Own creation, man, rejecting Him, His gifts, His love. And God's nature of holiness must consume sin, the very act of being holy is to remove, to destroy sin from the midst. Or holiness loses its content. 'Be ye holy, as I am holy'. The wicked of the earth reject this and follow and pracitice sin. Thus, the punishment of sin, of this choice is found, 'the wages of sin is death'. Death not only in this flesh, which is sin, but death in hell. Dying but never dead is the horror of hell.
