God Wants To Meet You
by Harry Thiessen
At the front of the church during a crusade there was small man five foot nothing with all this paraphernalia – camera, recorders to cover the revival. That was Sherwood Wirt from the Billy Graham magazine to cover the revival.
We were at an Afterglow when a note was passed to us. It said, "Would you folks mind coming to Minneapolis to share revival with us.?" signed Sherwood Wirt. We wrote back to him, "Well, we haven't checked it out with the Holy Spirit yet". When we shared that with him later his jaw just dropped, "Why do you have to check that with the Holy Spirit? After all, my name is Sherwood Wirt and when I say, "you go to Australia, you go to England, you got Korea, or some other place, people just jump and go." As a matter of fact they used to call him "Little Napolean" at the Billy Graham office because no one would even eat their lunch with him. He would sit at the table all by himself.
So here was this lay couple who had the courage to speak that way to him. That kind of got him. After about an hour he sent another note, "Better cool it a little bit. God's been speaking to me about pride."
A month later we were on our way at the invitation of Dr. Sherwood Wirt. This is crazy. What can we tell Dr. Wirt and his people? You know how when people have something on their heart they talk nonsense and they don't really say anything?. Well, that's the way he was. After he left us at the hotel we looked at each other and said, "You know that man has a need in his heart. And that's how it turned out.
That weekend we were in several churches and each place Sherwood went with us. Each place we went we shared revival. At the Afterglow at his church we invited people to come to meet God at the set-up chair. We asked, "Is there anyone who would like to meet God tonight?" Nobody moved, there wasn't a sound. Now silence doesn't scare us because we know that a lot of things happen in silence. Finally Dr. Wirt got up and said, "I guess it can't hurt, I'm going to go to the chair." He began to pray the prayer of St Frances of Assissi. I laid my hand on him and said, "Dr. Wirt this chair is for people who really want to meet God. I suggest you go and sit down until you're ready to meet God. He literally collapsed on that chair. I though he had a heart attack. God met him in a real way that evening. God wants to meet you.
