(1514-1572) Knox was the best known of the Scottish Reformers. He was ordained as a Catholic priest between 1530 and 1540, but converted to Christ after he met two Bible-believing Christians, Wishart and Beacon. Wishart was burned at the stake in 1546, and shortly afterwards Knox was arrested by the authorities. He spent nineteen months as a galley slave for punishment by Catholic authorities. Knox travelled to Germany in 1553 and then Geneva to study under Calvin, where he stayed about ten years. In 1560 Protestantism finally triumphed in Scotland, so Knox was able to return, was tried and aquitted of treason and lived the last few years of life in relative peace, preaching the gospel. He preached fearlessly to Queen Mary of Scotland and to Bloody Mary, Queen of England. It was said of Knox, "Here is one who never feared the face of man."
