(1803-1902) Pastor, teacher and evangelist known throughout England as the "apostle of love." Referred to as "the saintliest man I ever knew" by Charles Spurgeon, Chapman was an obedient and humble Christian who determined as a young man to "live Christ." Robert C. Chapman was born on January 4, 1803 in Helsingor, Denmark, where his father ran a prosperous import-export business. He studied law and set up a practice at age 20. Chapman had a dramatic conversion under the preaching of James Harington Evans at the John Street Chapel. He was immediately baptized and began teaching and preaching. Chapman is not very well known today, but was a major figure in the early Brethren movement in early 19th century England. Agape Leadership: Lessons From the Spiritual Life of R.C. Chapman is an excellent introduction.
