T. Austin-Sparks

T. Austin Sparks (1888 – 1971)

He was ordained as a Baptist pastor at the age of 24, and from 1912 to 1926 led three congregations in Greater London. During these years, he was also closely related to Jessie Penn-Lewis and her publication and speaking ministry, the "Overcomer Testimony."

Among the many books that he wrote, at least three are regarded as Christian classics: The School of Christ, The Centrality and Supremacy of the Lord Jesus Christ and We Beheld His Glory. The primary theme of Sparks' books is the exaltation of the Lord Jesus Christ. He mentored Watchman Nee for many years and was very influential in his understanding of the Church Life.

More of Christ: From "The Stewardship of the Mystery" by T. Austin Sparks

"Mr Sparks", as he was affectionately known, was born in London, England in 1888. He came to know Christ as a teenager and later became a Baptist pastor. However, his "ecclesiastical" career took a decidedly different direction when a physical crisis brought him to a place of brokenness.

At the same time God also delivered him from his previous prejudice against anything that was related to the "deeper life". As a result, he joined Jessie Penn-Lewis in the ministry of the spiritual growth of believers; a ministry to which he devoted his life and which also cost him his reputation and his career in the denominational circles of England.

He was based in southeast London at Honor Oak Christian Fellowship which is where Watchman Nee met and fellowshipped with him during a visit to England in 1933. Nee's refusal to disavow Austin-Sparks later became the grounds for him being disfellowshipped by the Taylor Brethren. It has been said that Watchman Nee considered Austin-Sparks as his spiritual mentor, and their fellowship appears to have been rich and fruitful.

Ascension And Glorifying Of The Lord Jesus

“The former treatise I made, O Theophilus, concerning all that Jesus began both to do and to teach, until the day in which He was received up, after that He had given commandment through the Holy Spirit unto the apostles whom He had chosen” (Acts 1:1–2). “We behold Him Who hath been made a little lo... Ascension and Glory

While much emphasis is laid upon the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus, it is not generally realized that His ascension is no less important as a truth basic to our life in Him and for His universal purpose. In the fuller unveilings of spiritual life in Christ which came progressively through... Read More

Reading: Ps. 24:3; Rev. 14:1-5; Ps. 122:2-4. “Who shall ascend...?” “Whither the tribes go up... for an ordinance (a testimony, R.V.M.) for Israel”. We continue for a little while in considering this matter of spiritual ascendency. It might help you if you could draw a mental diagram as of a wheel, ... Read More

Aspects of the City

A few verses from two places, one in the Old and one in the New Testament. In the Old, the first book of the Kings, chapter 7: "Solomon was building his own house thirteen years, and he finished all his house. Assurance as to God's Rest and Satisfaction in Christ

"...having foreordained us unto adoption as sons through Jesus Christ unto himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, to the praise of the glory of his grace, which he freely bestowed on us in the Beloved... to the end that we should be unto the praise of his glory, we who had before hoped... Attaining Unto The First Three (2 Samuel 23:8-12,19)

"These are the names of the mighty men whom David had... Adino... Eleazar... Shammah" (II Sam. 23:8-12). "(Abishai) was made their captain: howbeit he attained not unto the first three" (II Sam. 23:19). We are not so much concerned at the moment with the details of the exploits of these three men as... Attainment by Discipline

Reading: Ps. 24:3; Rev. 14:1-5 We will say right away what it is that is really in view, so that you see what we are working unto. In a word it is this — that God has always had in His mind and eye a people in absolute ascendency. You can change the word ascendency for other words if you like, such ... Read More

Battleground Of The Two Humanities

Lord, Thou knowest that this very act of prayer as we pause at this point is our acknowledgement and confession that we cannot go on without Thee, and we have no wish to do so. Lord, for the speaking of Thy truth, for the reception, understanding, and obedience, we need Thee; we cannot do without Th... Read More

Bethany - The Lord's Thought For His Assembly

The upper room of the first chapter of the Acts corresponds with Bethany, the "house of figs", and Bethany with the upper room. We are going to take up that thought and, as the Lord helps us, follow it out to greater fullness. What is before us is the Lord's desire to have at the end what He had at ... Read More

Bethel – God’s House

The way from Gilgal leads to Bethel. From Gilgal alone! Because Bethel is the house of God. We only get to the house of God through the Cross. What do we mean by the house of God? The expression ‘houses of God’ has created much confusion. It has given rise to the idea of holy ground, that is, places... Read More

Building Upon God’s Foundation

We have seen that, with chapter 54 of Isaiah’s prophecies, there commences a movement of God toward recovery and rebuilding. The Cross has cleared the way for this new prospect. BY MY SPIRIT

Reading: Zechariah 4 THE golden lampstand which Zechariah saw was the symbol of the divine testimony, the out shining of the glory of God. Captivity In The Lord (Ephesians 3:1, 4:1)

Read: Ephesians 3:1, 4:1; 2 Timothy 2:9 & 1:8. There is a very real sense in which the Apostle Paul, in his own person and experience, was an embodiment of the history of the Church in this age. Indeed it would seem to be a principle in the Divine economy that those to whom a revelation has been ent... Read More
