<p><span class="fs-17 fg-mustard bold">For Reading and Meditation:</span><br><span class="italic">     <span class="scriptRef" ref="jas+1:12-20">James 1:12-20</span></span></p><p>Yesterday we saw that the first step the psalmist took, the step which helped to save him from spiritual disaster, was most surprising. In the midst of overwhelming temptation, he says to himself: "If I give expression to my doubts and speak out of my envious, discouraged heart, I will put a stumbling-block in someone else's path - hence I will not say anything at all" (paraphrase mine). Now as we said yesterday, many people may find it difficult to accept this as the first step on the road to recovery - but it worked, nevertheless. Listen to what one commentator says about this first step: "Our reaction to the discovery of what his first step was in his process of recovery will be a very good test of our spiritual understanding." What does he mean? He means that if we fail to see that the steps of faith are sometimes very ordinary, then we are not as spiritual as we imagine. It's all right to have your head in the clouds, but make sure your feet are firmly planted on the earth! Keep in mind, then, that the thing which stopped the spiritual slide of the psalmist was very simple and ordinary - he made a decision not to say what was on the tip of his tongue. He stopped to think. Rather than spread his unbelief, he determined to keep his mouth shut; rather than threaten someone else's spiritual understanding, he resolved not to act on impulse. It might not have been a particularly high spiritual motive, but it was the thing that prevented him from falling. </p><p class="center-it italic bold mlr40 mtb20">Gracious and loving Father, help me grasp this point that sometimes t he first step towards spiritual recovery is one that is simple, practical and ordinary. Save me from becoming so super-spiritual that I neglect the commonplace. In Jesus' Name. <p><span class="fs-17 fg-mustard bold">For Reading and Meditation:</span><br><span class="italic">     <span class="scriptRef" ref="jas+1:1-18">James 1:1-18</span></span></p><p>The Bible is replete with instances of God's wisdom moving men and women through the most difficult times to the most wonderful ends. Take Abraham for example. Although he is known in Scripture as the "the friend of God," he was capable of some shabby behavior. On one occasion he actually compromised his wife's chastity  (<span class="scriptRef" ref="ge+12:10-20">Genesis 12:10-20</span>), and later, submitting to her pressure, fathered a child by Hagar, their maid  (<span class="scriptRef" ref="ge+16:1-16">Genesis 16:1-16</span>). Then, seeking to avoid Sarah's hysterical recriminations, he allowed her to drive Hagar away from their household  (<span class="scriptRef" ref="ge+21:8-21">Genesis 21:8-21</span>). Clearly, Abraham was not a man of strong principle and there were great flaws in his character. But God in wisdom dealt with this man and brought him through some great trials until he was changed from a man of the world to a true man of God. The same wisdom which ordered the path Abraham trod orders our lives. We should never be taken aback when unexpected and upsetting things happen to us. We should recognize that no matter how hard the trial, God's power will be there to get us through, and God's wisdom will ensure that the trial will be worth more than it costs. I like the almost tongue-in-cheek way Jim Packer describes what may be God's design when He permits us to go through trials: "Perhaps he means to strengthen us in patience, good humor, compassion, humility, or meekness by giving us some extra practice in exercising these graces under specially difficult situations." "Some extra practice." Some of us, myself included, sorely need it.</p><p class="center-it italic bold mlr40 mtb20">Father, help me grasp this truth once and for all, that Your wisdom ensures the trials I go through are worth far more than they cost. You are more committed to making me like Jesus than I am myself. It hurts sometimes, but deep down I am grateful. "Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds " (v. 2)

<p><span class="fs-17 fg-mustard bold">For Reading and Meditation:</span><br><span class="italic">     <span class="scriptRef" ref="heb+10:19-31">Hebrews 10:19-31</span></span></p><p>The Bible is a veritable mine of information on the fact of God's faithfulness. More than 4,000 years ago He said: "As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease"  (<span class="scriptRef" ref="ge+8:22">Genesis 8:22</span>). Every year furnishes us with fresh evidence that He has not gone back on His Word. In  <span class="scriptRef" ref="ge+15:13-14">Genesis 15:13-14</span>God declared to Abraham: "Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own, and they will be enslaved and ill-treated four hundred years. But  afterwards they will come out with great possessions." Did that happen?  <span class="scriptRef" ref="ex+12:41">Exodus 12:41</span> says: "At the end of the 430 years, to the very day, all the Lord's divisions left Egypt." The prophet Isaiah predicted that a virgin should conceive and bear a son whose name would be Immanuel  (<span class="scriptRef" ref="isa+7:14">Isaiah 7:14</span>). Centuries later the prediction came to pass. In  <span class="scriptRef" ref="ga+4:4">Galatians 4:4</span> we read: "But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman ." I wish I had the space to take you through the pages of Scripture and show you how faithful God has been to His Word. But you have a Bible for yourself; study it. Read it to know God. It is absolutely imperative that we who live in an age when unfaithfulness abounds, should acquaint ourselves with the fact of God's faithfulness. This is the basis of our confidence in Him. And this is why the Bible fairly bulges with this great and gripping truth. The more of God's truth we pack into our souls, the better equipped we are for the road that lies ahead.</p><p class="center-it italic bold mlr40 mtb20">Gracious and loving Father, the more I learn about Your nature and character the more I want to know. Just these glimpses I am getting set my soul on fire to know You more intimately. Take me deeper, dear Lord. In Jesus' Name. <p>We continue meditating on the idea that everything we do represents a goal. In fact, most of the frustration we experience in life comes from wrong goals and blocks to those goals. Let me illustrate. Cast your mind back to the last time you were angry. If you can identify your goal and what blocked your goal, then you have the clue to what produced your anger and frustration.</p>
<p>A man once asked me if I could explain what caused his deep-seated anger. It soon became apparent that his anger was due to a blocked goal. His goal in life was to make money. He reasoned: "If I can make plenty of money, then everyone will see that I am a successful and important person." When he encountered blocks to this goal, such as his wife's insistence that he cut down on the amount of time he was spending in his business, he would erupt in anger.</p>
<p>I pointed out that the way to deal with the anger was to establish a goal that no-one could block. And what was that? To please the Lord. He resisted that idea at first, but when he came to realize that his goal in life was unbiblical and that his anger resulted from others blocking his unbiblical goal, he made a new commitment to God and found happiness and release. From then on his goal was not to make money, but to please the Lord.</p>
<p>I has to point out that there is nothing wrong with wanting to make money - it is a legitimate human desire - but it must remain a desire and never become a goal.</p>
<p class="mlr40 mtb20"><strong>Prayer:</strong> O God my gracious Father, help me never to turn what can be a legitimate human desire into a life goal. Save me from pursuing unbiblical objectives, and guide me toward the truth which alone can make me free. In Jesus' Name. Amen.</p>

Run in Such A Way As To Get The Price -  1 Corinthians 9:15-27

<p><span class="fs-17 fg-mustard bold">For Reading and Meditation:</span><br><span class="italic">     <span class="scriptRef" ref="ps+149:1-9">Psalm 149:1-9</span></span></p><p>We come now to Christ's third prescription for happiness: "Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth"  (<span class="scriptRef" ref="mt+5:5">Matthew 5:5</span>). How we have shied away from that word "meek". We have thought of meekness as weakness and thus have a totally wrong concept of what Jesus meant. The Amplified Bible translates it thus: "Blessed are the meek (the mild, patient, long-suffering), for they shall inherit the earth." The dictionary defines "meek" as "humble, compliant and submissive". Does this mean that Jesus expects the children of the kingdom to be like subdued puppies who crawl into their master's presence and cower at his feet? Or to become the type of people who lack inner fortitude and gumption, who can be easily pushed around and manipulated? The truly meek person - in the Biblical sense of the word - is not timid, shy, hesitant and unassuming, but trusting, confident and secure. The root meaning of the word "meekness" is that of yieldedness or surrender - a characteristic without which no real progress can be made in the Christian life. What happens, for example, to the scientist who approaches the mysteries of the universe in a manner that is aggressive and belligerent? He discovers nothing. But what happens to the scientist who approaches the mysteries of the universe in a spirit of meekness? He finds its richest secrets unfolding themselves to him and he is able to harness the mighty forces around him to advantage. The Christian who approaches life in the same spirit - the spirit of meekness and submission - discovers the true meaning of his existence and the purpose of God in all his affairs. </p><p class="center-it italic bold mlr40 mtb20">Gracious Father, help me to understand clearly the difference between meekness and weakness. And show me how to apply this principle in all I say and in all I do. This I ask in Christ's powerful and precious Name. <p><span class="fs-17 fg-mustard bold">For Reading and Meditation:</span><br><span class="italic">     <span class="scriptRef" ref="jas+1:1-12">James 1:1-12</span></span></p><p>We are meditating on the second of Christ's Beatitudes: "Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted." Yesterday we saw that the meaning of this statement is that when we are willing to experience sorrow and grief, then God is able to use these encounters to sensitise our spirits and make our ministry to others more effective and more fruitful. I am afraid, however, that the majority of Christians, myself included, greatly fear this truth. Some years ago after I had expressed this same truth a woman wrote to me thus: "I am terribly afraid of what you said concerning grief and sorrow being the means in God's hands of deepening our sensitivity to others. I have not found this to be so. I find that grief and sorrow make me more concerned about myself than about others. Thus I cannot pray the prayer you suggested: 'Lord, put all the pressure on me You want; I know that the pressure You permit is all part of Your purpose - to make me the kind of person You want me to be.' " We must always be careful that we do not interpret Biblical truth by human experiences; we must interpret human experiences by Biblical truth. Scripture tells us that God permits pressure for a purpose, and that sorrow and grief will produce tremendous benefits in our lives - providing we let them. There's the rub! Whenever Biblical principles don't seem to work for us, then don't question the principle - question whether or not you are open to it, and whether you are applying it in the way God directs. There is very little point in arguing with God - He's always right. </p><p class="center-it italic bold mlr40 mtb20">O Father, help me to see that when things are not working out the way Your Word decrees, the problems are not on Your side - but on mine. And help me to side with You and against myself in such issues - for You are always right. "Dear brothers, is your life full of difficulties and temptations? Then be happy." (v. 2, TLB)

<p><i>"Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the Crown Of Life, which the LORD hath promised to them that love Him."</i>   <span class="scriptRef" ref="jas+1:12">James 1:12</span> </p><p> Yes, he is blessed while he is enduring the trial. No eye can see this till he has been anointed with heavenly eye salve. But he must endure it and neither rebel against God nor turn aside from his integrity. He is blessed who has gone through the fire and has not been consumed as a counterfeit.</p><p> When the test is over, then comes the hallmark of divine approval  "the crown of life." As if the LORD said, "Let him live; he has been weighed in the balances, and he is not found wanting." Life is the reward: not mere being, but holy, happy, true existence, the realization of the divine purpose concerning us. Already a higher form of spiritual life and enjoyment crowns those who have safely passed through fiercest trials of faith and love.</p><p> The LORD hath promised the crown of life to those who love Him. Only lovers of the LORD will hold out in the hour of trial; the rest will either sink or sulk, or slink back to the world. Come, my heart, dost thou love thy LORD? Truly? Deeply? Wholly? Then that love will be tried; but many waters will not quench it, neither will the floods drown it. LORD, let Thy love nourish mine to the end.</p>

<p>Blessed is the man that endureth whatever ordeal the Lord may see fit that he should be Subjected to, for the discovery of his heart. These temptations are simply processes of examination; they are opportunities which the Lord giveth us of verifying our professions. </p><p>To men that boast of their inward goodness and strength, Providence often seems to say, " You have thought yourself obliged to speak of your own good qualities, because the vicissitudes of your life were not such as to bring out the evidence of these qualities; but I will now so order events that your goodness shall have a perfect opportunity of revealing itself." </p><p>Men that praise themselves, ought never to find any fault when disappointments and disasters befall them; for if they indeed possess that strength of mind and superiority of character of which they boast, they will feel these trials little and their inward excellence will be enabled to speak for itself. In their case we too often see that pride cometh before a fall. Men are continually clamoring - without being aware of it - for some severer condition of life; they are continually challenging circumstances to assume a more forbidding and hostile attitude; they find themselves in an inadequate sphere; they are conscious of virtues that have never yet found expression.  They urge God (by self-laudation) to put them into the fire and see if they will not come forth as gold. </p><p>Now the Christian does not boast, but he makes a profession. He professes to have renounced the idea of his own goodness, and to be as dependent on God for moral goodness as for physical. God says, "It is well; but men will not believe thee; I will put thee in a situation calculated to elicit the full evidence of this." The Lord perhaps raises him then to considerable distinction; all men praise him, and it is interesting to see the Christian preserving his humility and prayer-fullness in the midst of this fiery trial. He professes to fear God rather than man. Then men bring great rocks and say, " Fear God, by all means; all that we ask is that you should give up an infinitesimal part of what you call the fear of God, and do our will in one most insignificant particular; otherwise we will grind you to powder beneath these rocks." " Grind," is his reply; and we see that his profession was not in vain. He professes to have a spirit of submission to all the appointments of the Lord. Then the Lord proceeds to deal with him in a way that seems to him altogether strange and unaccountable and uncalled for.  The things that befall him seem to him not to have been in the bond.  It strikes him that submission is hardly the thing called for and that he does well to be angry. But happily he considers that the providence of God has taken this provocative aspect for the very purpose of enabling the spirit of submission in him to manifest itself more unimpeachably; and so he endures. </p><p>I wish to remember always, and especially at the time when my will is suffering opposition, when a stone seems to be given in reply to my request for bread, that the stone so given is much better than bread; the opportunity of glorifying God by yielding my will to his, is much more valuable than the good then withheld. Blessed is not the man that is exempt from trial; but blessed is the man that endures it, maintaining to the end his patience, zeal, hope, love and joy. </p>

''Blessed is the man that endureth temptation." - James 1:12. 

<p>This is a very evil world. It lieth in wickedness. The Prince of evil reigns over it. No wonder the Christian longs to take the wings of a dove and flee away and be at rest. But it is well for him to bear in mind that in this very world, where the enemies of God appear to have everything their own way, there is wonderful scope given for the exhibition of love to God. In some respects heaven cannot equal it. In heaven it is not given unto love to declare itself by suffering. There are no reproaches to be borne there; no humiliations to be encountered; no injuries to be sustained. We see from the example of the Lord Jesus Christ how that even divine love itself is able to clothe itself with honor by means of suffering. Our only chance of signalizing our love to Christ by long suffering, meekness and self-renunciation, is that which we now enjoy. </p><p>We see here that they who endure temptation are they who love God. We profess to love God more than self and all its possessions. If the Lord lays upon us a tax of one per cent, he gives us to that extent an opportunity of showing our sincerity. If the tax amount to ten per cent, then the opportunity is so much greater; if to fifty per cent, then it looks as though the Lord had confidence in us. He takes us at our word. He believes in our whole-hearted love. And if the tax swallow up everything we have, and leave us utterly bankrupt of all worldly good, then let us consider that God has only taken what we long ago recognized as his; and let us call to mind that there is a precious relation between the trial endured and the crown of life. " When he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life!' </p><p>There are some whose piety is of so utterly defective a character that it is well understood beforehand that they cannot endure trial. They can only maintain their position in the church by the most tender and delicate treatment. How then will they pass in safety through the terrors of the day of the Lord? He Cometh with a rod of iron; and everything that can be broken in pieces by that rod must be broken. The bruised reed indeed he will not break; he heals it and gives it strength, and it becomes a rod in his hand. He bestows the most tender and delicate treatment; but it is by way of preparation for the trial. And after the trial, the crown of life. </p>

"When he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him." - James 1:12. 

<p>You will have treasure in heaven … come, follow Me. § I am … your exceedingly great reward. Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord. They shall reign forever and ever.<br><br>You will receive the crown of glory that does not fade away. § The crown of life. § The crown of righteousness. § An imperishable crown.<br><br>Father, I desire that they also whom You gave Me may be with Me where I am, that they may behold My glory which You have given Me. § We shall always be with the Lord.<br><br>For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.</p>

Daily Light on the Daily Path or Daily Light is a Christian daily devotional scripture reading published by Bagster & Sons about 1875. It has been reprinted continually since then. It consists of brief groupings of scripture passages which speak to prominent Biblical themes—two themes (morning and evening) for each day of the year. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it.<br><br>Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.<br><br>Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer … Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.<br><br>Our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory. § Praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ.</p>

 Those who honor Me I will honor. 

<p>We … glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope. Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us. § Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. § My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. § Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. § Most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me … For when I am weak, then I am strong.</p>

 Indeed we count them blessed who endure.
