As the rooster crows, Peter denies Jesus for the third time.

Peter denies being a disciple of Jesus, and the warms himself by the fire. Perhaps there is something symbolic about his seeking outward warmth as his relationship with Jesus grows cooler.

Jesus is bound by those He came to set free. He stands before the high priest Caiaphas, who presumes to stand in judgment of the Most High who will judge the world, and who as High Priest, is making atonement once and forever.

Peter started swinging his sword, one man against 200 . . . I would say he had some courage.  Jesus healed the man's ear, and then said He would drink the full cup of God's wrath.

Jesus prays for His disciples, acknowledging their acceptance of God's word, obedience, and belief in Him as the clear proofs that they belong to the Father.

The work Jesus accomplished on earth, allowed us to see the multifaceted excellencies of the unseen God. The work He does through His people today, also displays His glory.

The excellence of Jesus was displayed as He humbled Himself and obeyed God, even to death on a cross. The excellence of God's heart of unfailing love was displayed as He sent His beloved Son to suffer for the payment of our sins.

Although Jesus told the disciples they would all desert Him, there was no hint of condemnation, anger, or bitterness.  He simply said it would happen, and then spoke words of peace and comfort to them. Jesus is AWESOME!

God is awesome! He holds back His power so we can get to know Him for who He is  . . . His personality.

Jesus told the disciples that God the Father loved them, because they loved Jesus.  This sounds like a conditional love, and in a way, it is.

Jesus brought an end to the Old Testament priesthood, and initiated a new way for His followers to communicate directly with God the Father.

Jesus tells the guys to ask in His name, and the Father will give them answers to their spiritual questions. We have to be on guard against taking His prayer promises out of context!

Jesus says the disciples are about to experience a brief time of anguish followed by a lasting joy . . . similar to the pain and joy of a woman in childbirth.

Daily Gospel of John 16:21-22

The twisted world leaders were about to celebrate a premature victory, the the disciples were about to experience unnecessary grief. But all would change a few days later when Jesus would walk away from His tomb!
