So, we are people who reside between Advents. Advent is all about looking both ways. By looking at His first coming, we're reminded of all that Christ has done. By looking toward His second coming, we are expectant of all Christ will do. In Luke 21, Jesus is explaining how to be ready for His coming. As we wait for his return, we find ourselves asking some of the same questions the disciples ask in this text, “How long will it be, Jesus, until you these things happen?” and “How will we know when you will come for us?” Jesus’ answer for us and for all of God’s people is to live in hope, trust His Word and stay awake. We will not know the day or the hour of His return, but may God help us to live today in perpetual preparedness, unshakeable security, and surprising hope.

Having never been there before, coming face-to-face with our own mortality can be a bit daunting. Thankfully, in Deuteronomy 34 we get a glimpse of what it looks like to approach death. We get to see how a godly man dies. So, whether you’re young or old there are lessons we can learn from Moses as he takes his last breath. Well, what we learn in Deuteronomy 24 is that God’s people are supposed to be counter-cultural. They are supposed to care about the weak, needy, and vulnerable. And the reason why, is because when we were oppressed, destitute, and without hope, God cared for us. He graciously redeemed us. So, may his grace transform us into people who really care about others.

Women wouldn’t be captured, people wouldn’t be murdered, divorce wouldn’t be a thing, and children wouldn’t be neglected or abused. But we don’t live in a perfect world. We live in a time where brutal realities expose human fallenness. We live in a place where depraved instincts and heart-wrenching cruelties define our grim existence. So as believers we need to learn how to work for the humane amidst the pollution of inhumanity. We need to strive to mitigate the worst effects of sin amid human distress and misconduct. We need to shine light into the horrific extremes of brutality and injustice. As Jesus said, we need to be the “salt of the earth,” slowing down its decay and decadence. Within the imperfections and brokenness of human life, may the Lord help us restrain evil and purge wickedness from our midst. May he teach us from Deuteronomy 21 how to lessen the impact of sin and wickedness in this world.

Christ’s sacrifice on the cross enables us to have righteousness through faith. By turning to the law in an attempt to gain righteousness through works, the Galatians had “fallen away from grace.” They were turning their backs on what Christ had already secured for them. If they really wanted to earn God’s favor through following rules, they would have to follow them all. The Old Testament law was a comprehensive unit; one part could not be enforced in isolation from the rest of the law. So if the Galatians really wanted to go down this path they would have to follow not just the Ten Commandments, but more than 600 other laws that were handed down by Moses. In Galatians 5, Paul exhorts the churches of Galatia to take hold of the freedom that has been given to them in Christ. He begins with a rallying cry, “For freedom Christ has set us free.” And he ends with an admonition “Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.” May the Lord help us celebrate our freedom… our freedom to love this Independence Day.

In Deuteronomy 17-18, Moses describes four categories of leaders that were supposed to help guide the people of Israel after he was off the scene. Judges were supposed to be agents and administrators of justice. Priests were to be guardians and instructors of God’s word. Kings were supposed to model the fear of the Lord, and prophets were supposed to serve as God’s mouthpiece.From our text this week we can see what God intends for leaders. We can understand the divine ideal set forward for those who would stand in front of the people of God. Unfortunately, we all know that leaders throughout history have fallen short of God’s glorious plan. Monarchs, rulers, presidents and spiritual leaders, have woefully missed the mark. And while that may leave some people feeling frustrated and angry, believers have a settled hope for One who will fulfill all that God intends. Christians wait for the return of the true prophet, priest, and king – Jesus. May the Lord teach us and deepen our trust in him.

In Deuteronomy 17-18, Moses describes four categories of leaders that were supposed to help guide the people of Israel after he was off the scene. Judges were supposed to be agents and administrators of justice. Priests were to be guardians and instructors of God’s word. In an age where “justice” seems to be a political buzzword, a social rally cry, and a media fetish it is important for God’s people to understand the qualities of biblical justice. With so many popular opinions swirling around, today more than ever, we need to embrace God’s perspective. The Judge of all the earth who always does what is right has delineated what true justice looks like. In Deuteronomy 16-17, Moses outlines the qualifications of good judges and qualities of true justice. Our text this week provides timeless truths that can help guide us through some of the sticky conversations and tenuous cultural issues of our day. So, may the Lord teach us about the dispensers, administration, standard, and God of justice as we dig into his word together.
