Parting Words: The importance of God’s Word… 2 Peter 1:16-21 
 
Our theme verses for our current series are found in:

13 I think it right, as long as I am in this body, to stir you up by way of reminder, 
14 since I know that the putting off of my body will be soon, as our Lord Jesus Christ made clear to me. 
15 And I will make every effort so that after my departure you may be able at any time to recall these things. 
 
Remember back to how all the struggles and difficulties in our lives began: 
Genesis 3:1-5 
1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. 
He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” 
2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, 
3 but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’” 
4 But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die.  
5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 
 
The attack on God’s Word is at the core of the Fall. As a result, it is the core of any attack by a false teacher/doctrine today. 
 
In his final words, Peter reminds the believers of a couple of powerful points about God’s Word: 
 
I. Peter reminds these believers of the cause of the Word of God. – (2 Peter 1:16-17; 20-21a) 
 
II. Peter reminds them of the confirmation of the Word of God. — (2 Peter 1:17-19) 
 
III. Peter remind these believers how the Word of God continues today. – 
(2 Peter 1:21b) 
 
Application: 
The Word of God is a powerful force and it is no surprise the enemy does not want you consuming it daily.

The reason for giving Thanks… 1 John 2:1-6

The word thanksgiving – means a public acknowledgment of Divine goodness. 
 
In this section John reminds us of some reasons mankind should be thankful… 
 
I. Jesus Christ is our advocate. — (1 John 2:1) 
 
Advocate – a person who publicly supports or recommends a particular cause of policy. 
 
II. Jesus Christ is the righteous. — (1 John 2:1) 
 
Righteous means innocent, faultless, guiltless/approved of or acceptable of God. 
 
III. Jesus Christ is our propitiation. – (1 John 2:2) 
 
Propitiation – here is used in describing Jesus Christ so it is in the form of a noun, which means the method of appeasing. 
 
Application: 
The way we display our thankfulness to our Lord is through our daily service and surrender to Him as Lord. 
 
Matthew 11:28-30 
28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 
29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 
30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. 
 
For the True Child of God keeping the Commandments of Christ and service to our Lord, are not a Burden rather they are a Delight.

The Giver of Life…. 1 Corinthians 10:1-13 
 
Theme Verse for Today: 
1 Corinthians 10:12 “Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall.” 
 
Here in our text Paul is reminding the Corinthians to keep their eyes fastened upon the Giver of life rather than merely the blessings of life. 
 
Powerful Point: Because if it was not for the Giver of life there would not be life, much less blessings in this life. 
 
I. Paul reminds the Corinthians of the blessing that Israel received from God. — 
(1 Corinthians 10:1-4) 
 
We see three areas that Israel experienced the blessing of God in our text… 
 
1.) They enjoyed deliverance from Egypt… (1 Corinthians 10:1) 
 
2.) They were baptized into Moses… (1 Corinthians 10:2) 
 
3.) They were spiritually and physically provided for… (1 Corinthians 10:3-4) 
 
II. Powerful point of application — (1 Corinthians 10:5 & 12) 
 
1 Corinthians 10:12 “Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall.” 
 
Two closing take a-ways: 
 
1.) Apathy and complacency are the key ingredients to missing out of what God can do in our lives. 
 
2.) On the flip side, faithfulness and obedience are the key ingredients to seeing God do powerful things through us for His glory.

Christian Freedom… 1 Corinthians 8:1-13 
 
Remember what we looked at last week from 1 Corinthians 7:21-23: We who have been freed by the Gospel, from the master of sin, have exchanged our old master (sin) for a far better Master (Christ). 
 
However, do not forget this powerful verse found in: 
Galatians 5:13 “For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.” 
 
“Christian liberty is not unbridled license. It is never freedom to sin, and often it should exclude things that in themselves are not sin but that may become sinful or lead others to sin.” – John MacArthur 
 
 
The Apostle Paul’s answer to the question about food offered to idols comes with an important lesson/reminder/warning about living out our freedom in Christ. 
 
I. The lesson taught. — (1 Corinthians 8:1-3) 
Knowledge – facts, information and skills acquired by a person throughout experience or education; an academic or practical understanding of a subject. 
 
“These believers at Corinth were mature in knowledge, but were not mature in love. To have love but no knowledge is unfortunate; but to have knowledge and no love is equally tragic.” – John MacArthur 
 
II. The reminder given. — (1 Corinthians 8:4-6) 
There is one God and one Lord, Christ Jesus. 
 
III. The warning issued. – (1 Corinthians 8:7-11) 
The warning also included the answer to the question asked by the Corinthians about food offered to idols. 
 
Application: 
1 Corinthians 8:12-13, Our lives, lived out for God’s glory, are meant to impact others positively, not negatively for the cause of Christ. 
 
I remind you of a point we made a few weeks ago not, just because we can, does not meant we should.

In our text today, Paul continues his discussion of a servant/follower of Christ, by revealing what it does not look like and then what it does look like. 
 
I. Paul says a servant of Christ is not one that is puffed up or prideful. – (1 Corinthians 4:6-8 & 10) 
 
Remember: 
The thing that causes division is selfishness. The thing that causes unity is selflessness. 
 
Important: 
Pride becomes wrong when its object is wrong. 
 
II. Paul says a servant of Christ is one that possesses a servant’s heart. – (1 Corinthians 4:9-13) 
 
You cannot be a servant when your focus is on yourself. 
 
There are some things that emerge from our text that highlights Paul’s servant heart: 
1.) He was a spectacle. 
2.) He was a fool for Christ. 
3.) He suffered for Christ. 
 
Application:

The Cause of Division… 
1 Corinthians 3:1-9 
 
Division - the action of separating something into parts or the process of being separated; disagreement between two or more groups, typically producing tension or hostility. 
 
Paul has identified the problem of Division in the church at Corinth and he seeks to resolve the problem. 1 Corinthians 1:10-13 
 
The only way to resolve a problem is to find its source or cause, that is what Paul addresses in our text. 
 
I. Paul identifies the cause of division. – (1 Corinthians 3:1-3) 
 
II. Paul reveals the characteristics of division. – (1 Corinthians 3:3-4) 
 
Division is caused by: 
 
1.) Jealousy 
 
2.) Strife 
 
III. Paul shares the way division can be circumvented. – (1 Corinthians 3:5-9) 
 
Application:

Paul reveals the plan and purpose for reaching the masses with the preaching of the cross:

United we stand, but divided we fall. 
 
The enemy of unity is pride and selfishness. 
 
The issues Paul has addressed with the Corinthians deal with unity around the gospel. 
 
In our text today Paul further unifies the Corinthians around the central truth of preaching the cross: 
1 Corinthians 1:18 “For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 
 
For those who have been impacted by the gospel, Paul teaches they are called to proclaim the word of the cross. Being a Christian means we are called into a life, led by the Holy Spirit, of rescuing others. The rescued become the rescuers!

II. God’s purpose in what seems like a preposterous plan. – (1 Corinthians 1:29-31)

Application: 
 
There is not a person in this building who is exempt from the call of God on their lives for service. What God is looking for is someone who says I am nothing, and Christ is everything. God is looking for someone to say, I am willing to decrease so that Christ can increase. 
 
To be used by God we must become usable! This happens through daily submission to our Lord and His Plan in our lives to reach the masses for His glory.

The Gospel: 
Why we need it… 
 
 
The word Gospel means good news or good message. 
 
In our text today, Paul reminds us of why the Gospel (good news) is so needful for mankind. 
 
Key Verse: 
Romans 3:23 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” 
 
 
We need the Gospel for the following reasons: 
 
I. Sin has affected our character. – (Romans 3:10-12) 
 
II. Sin has affected our conversation. – (Romans 3:13-14)

IV. The conclusion to our bad situation is the promise of good news. –

Closing Thought: 
We have a serious issue called sin, that has affected us all. This will eventually cause spiritual death. The only remedy we have available to us is called the Gospel. 
 
 
Paul calls us, as believers, to amazing and high standards that are impossible to live up to without the Holy Spirit at work in our lives. 
 
Paul reminds us of our response to the Great Shepherd: 
 
I. As God’s sheep, we are to rejoice always. – (1 Thessalonians 5:16) 
 
II. As God’s sheep, we are to pray continually. – (1 Thessalonians 5:17) 
 
III. As God’s sheep, we are to give thanks constantly. – (1 Thessalonians 5:18) 
 
Do not miss this in verse 18 “this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” 
 
IV. Paul’s closing warning to God’s sheep. – (1 Thessalonians 5:19-22) 
 
Closing Thought: 
We must constantly be on guard against the attacks of the enemy. He is the roaring lion walking about seeking someone to devour.

The Gospel:
Why we need it…


The word Gospel means good news or good message.

In our text today, Paul reminds us of why the Gospel (good news) is so needful for mankind.

Key Verse:
Romans 3:23 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”


We need the Gospel for the following reasons:

I. Sin has affected our character. – (Romans 3:10-12)

II. Sin has affected our conversation. – (Romans 3:13-14)

III. Sin has affected our conduct. – (Romans 3:15-18)

IV. The conclusion to our bad situation is the promise of good news. – 
(Romans 3:19-22)

The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. 
 
Paul, in our text, uncovers the benefits of Christ-centered giving in the life of the believer… 
 
I. Paul’s real-life axiom for Christ centered giving. – (2 Corinthians 9:6) 
The axiom of the law of the harvest is one of the clearest truths Paul could use. 
 
The law of the harvest is defined in: 
Galatians 6:7-8 
7 Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap.  
8 For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.

4.) The faithful giver praises God the Father for the ultimate gift. – (2 Corinthians 9:14-15) 
 
Closing Point of Application: 
1.) Christ-centered giving will test our faith, but Christ-centered giving will reward those to walk by faith not by sight.

Paul reminds the Corinthians because of God’s grace and forgiveness granted to them, we are called to display grace to the world around us, by giving back to advance the Kingdom of Christ. 
 
I. Paul shares that giving, in the life of a believer, is to be fueled by God’s grace. – (2 Corinthians 8:1) 
 
II. Paul gives them a powerful reminder that giving is not to be hindered by difficult circumstances we face. – (2 Corinthians 8:2) 
 
III. Paul shares that giving is to flow out of a heart of joy and generosity. – (2 Corinthians 8:2)
