I. 1 Corinthians 14:1-5 The Right Gift for the Job
A. VERSE 1: Love chooses the right gift for the job
B. Have you ever used a:
• butterknife for a screwdriver?
• screwdriver for a hammer? or a prybar? or a knife?
• a knife for a saw? (a finger for a nail?)
• Use the right tool for the job! Here the Holy Spirit says...
C. VERSE 2: Tongues speak to God (Acts 2:11, 10:46)
D. VERSE 3: Prophesy speaks edification -building up
1. exhortation -- encouragement (comfort)
2. comfort -- giving relief in affliction - not just
consolation but strength in the Lord
E. VERSE 4: the direction of these two gifts
1. tongues - edifies self -- not a bad thing in the right setting
2. prophesy - edifies the church
F. VERSE 5: Not nullifying a gift of the Spirit, instructing on
the right gift for the job: the goal of our gathering as the
church - edification (Ephesians 4:11-12)
II. 1 Corinthians 14:6-19 Prophecy Edifies the Church
A. VERSE 7: The instrument and the music
B. VERSE 8: The trumpet’s call: retreat for charge, the alarm for
reveille - trouble
C. VERSES 10-11 Language must be understood to grasp the meaning
otherwise it might as well be speaking into the air (v.9) and
we might as well be from different parts of the world

E. VERSE 13: The speaker should pray for interpretation
F. VERSE 15-19: A both/and for Paul
