In this video we will take a look at a common proof text in
1 John 3:6-9 that many use to teach the doctrine of Perseverance of the Saints (aka Once Saved Always Saved). It is argued from this passage that one who is born of God cannot sin and that if they cannot sin then they can never be lost. They believe this because of a wrong understanding of the imputed righteousness of Jesus Christ. In this video we will discuss how the false doctrine of the imputed righteousness of Jesus Christ to "the elect" causes one to read passages like these in 1 John with a wrong understanding of what is being said in light of the entire context. If we just allow Scripture to interpret Scripture, we can conclude from reading what John writes in the first two chapters of 1 John and come to a conclusion that doesn't create contradiction in Scripture. We will learn that whoever "abideth" in Jesus is referring to a continual abiding and "sinneth" is referring to a lifestyle of sin. These aren't referring to one time events.
1 John 3:7 makes it very clear that whoever "doeth" righteousness is righteous as He is righteous. This is all in accordance with the rest of Scripture regarding our need to abide in Jesus Christ by walking after the Spirit and not after the flesh. He that committeth sin is of the devil, referring to a lifestyle of sin (a continuation in unrighteousness). Verse 9 tells us that whosoever is born of God does not commit sin (not because it is impossible for the born again believer to sin, but because he is morally restrained and knows that he can't sin and be pleasing to God).
