Is sacrifice to the Lord wrong? No, when it is mandated by God the way God wants you to do it. When you go outside of that mandate to do it in your own way for your own purposes, then God is not pleased with it because He wants your obedience over that sacrifice. King Saul found this out and we need to take a lesson from his "partial" obedience and see that God still sees it as a total disobedience.
