2 Peter 2:17-19 They are wells without water
We have all seen an illustration of someone wandering through a desert land parched and seeking desperately something to drink. They look off into the horizon and see a glimmer of hope off in the distance, through the haze they see a desert oasis with a pool of thirst-quenching water surrounded by palm trees. They struggle to get to their only hope just to dive into a big pile of sand, it was all just a mirage. Peter says that false teachers are a lot like the mirage analogy, they are wells with no water. People come to them hoping to get nourishment only to find that really, they have nothing to offer them, they are empty. Their words are empty full of boastful words and they get an audience by appealing to the lustful desires of the flesh. They promise freedom all the while they are really creating individuals who are enslaved by their sins that have control over them.
The church should take great care in who they allow to influence them in this world, because all paths do not lead to the promise land. Therefore, it is so important that all believers have a constant and steady Bible study regime, so they know exactly what the Word of God says and does not say. They need to understand the context that scripture was written under and how it relates to the God’s message. We can’t simply just follow the message that tickles our ears or gives us the warm and fuzzies we must follow the message that is in line with God’s word. God will never contradict Himself or change direction on moral issues, God is the same today, yesterday, tomorrow, and forever. (Hebrews 13:8) The God of the Bible is the God of our present situation and we must make sure that we are not deceived by teachings that are not in line with the Bible.
