When you are learning the True Gospel from the pages of Scripture, one of the key verses that lays the foundation for our great need of a Savior comes from Romans chapter 6, verse 23 "The wages of sin is death". It's been that way ever since God warned Adam in Garden of Eden not to eat from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, "for in the day that you eat of it, you shall surely die." (Genesis 2:17)
What kind of death, you ask? You name it! Every kind of death there is to die! Physical death, relational death and most notably, spiritual death! And that's how people arrive in this world - every last one of us - born spiritually dead. Not just "a little bit dead", not just "primarily dead", but "DOA from our mother's womb!
You were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked . . . 4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ - by grace you have been saved. (Ephesians 2)
Of course, that's why Jesus came. And that's why Jesus insisted to Nicodemus the religious teacher that he had to be born again, born from above, born of the Spirit of God - because "unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God." (John 3:5). That makes sense! And so yes, "the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord." (Romans 6:23)
But ever since Eve caved in to the Serpent's temptation, death has stalked mankind like a serial killer. The Reality of Everything was altered on an individual basis and on a global basis. They ate. They sinned. They died. And it was all passed on to their offspring - all the way up to the present day.
