A sermon delivered by C.H. Spurgeon, Lord's Day morning October 8th 1865.
'Puseyism' is a reference to Edward B Pusey, and the Oxford Movement, which he founded. Pusey sought to return the church of England back to its Roman Catholic dogma. The Oxford Movement wanted a return to Masses, priests, candles, incense, vestments and sought to undo the simplicity of the Reformation.
Spurgeon disliked courting controversy and division. He loved the pure Gospel. Yet here he shows his skill in wielding the Sword of the Spirit against the tyranny of ceremonies and outward forms.
I believe this sermon shows clearly Spurgeon’s many gifts in fair but cutting debate. Notice that he chose the Lord’s day, and not a Thursday evening, in which to do this. To him the issues at stake affected the Gospel itself.
