Our Father, you are the King of glory, the Lord of hosts, the Maker of all things seen and unseen. Our highest duty and greatest privilege is to worship you as the only true and living God. Jesus gives hope of eternal life and his Spirit prepares us for the new heaven and earth. But we have sinned by not fully or adequately preparing our hearts with foresight, diligence, and moderation to be in your holy and majestic presence. Christ bled and died to obtain for us this privilege, yet too often we have taken it for granted and treated it with neglect. Our earthly business, worldly concerns, and personal recreations have been dispatched in such a way as to hinder our spiritual communion with you. In handling the Scriptures, partaking of the ordinances, joining in prayer, and singing your praise we have been dull, lethargic, and indifferent. We have honored you with our lips, but our hearts have been far from you. Please forgive us for these and all our sins in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Minister: How is the word made effectual to salvation?
Unison: The Spirit of God makes the reading, but especially the preaching of the word, an effectual means of enlightening, convincing, and humbling sinners; of driving them out of themselves and drawing them unto Christ; of conforming them to his image and subduing them to his will; of strengthening them against temptations and corruptions; of building them up in grace and establishing their hearts in holiness and comfort through faith unto salvation.
