Text: 2 Timothy 2:14 – 19

VITAL REMINDERS CONCERNING THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD OF GOD

1. Not to strive about words to no profit (2 Timothy 2:14)

a. Something is wrong if one’s ministry of the word brings no profit!

b. It could even put people in danger of being ruined!

2. Be diligent to present yourself approved to God (2 Timothy 2:15a)

a. This is a vital reminder that we are to be workers approved of God!

b. What does it mean to be approved?

i. Tested

ii. Proven

iii. Trustworthy

c. Our part

i. To be diligent in our work!

ii. To be a worker whom God would approve of!

iii. A worker who does not need to be ashamed because he is truly diligent!

3. Rightly dividing the word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15b)

a. To interpret the word of truth with sharpness and skill

b. To become a highly skilled teacher of the word of truth

c. This will take a lifetime of discipline and diligence

d. This would be a worker whom God would approve of

e. This is a vital reminder to keep improving in our skill in teaching the word of God!

WARNING AGAINST THOSE WHO HAVE STRAYED FROM THE TRUTH

1. Shun those who teach erroneous things (2 Timothy 2:16)

a. Profane

b. Idle babblings

c. They will increase to more ungodliness

2. Their message is deadly (2 Timothy 2:17)

a. Their message will spread like cancer

b. Like a deadly disease that kills!

3. The danger of these messengers (2 Timothy 2:17 – 18)

a. Paul was not afraid to call them out

i. They were made known

ii. They must be exposed and stopped

b. They were promoting untruth

i. They were teaching that the resurrection of believers was already past

ii. This teaching led some of the weaker believers astray

GREAT CHALLENGES

1. To be a worker approved of God

2. To cultivate diligence in mastering the word of truth

3. To learn how to minister to people with the word of God effectively

4. To stand firm on the word of truth and shun that which is erroneous!
