Text: Psalm 89:30 – 37
CONTEMPLATION ON GOD’S COVENANT TO DAVID
1. God’s promise of blessing (Psalm 89:28 – 29)
a. Faithfulness
b. Mercy
c. Exalted
d. Throne of David established
e. David’s royal lineage will not cease
2. God’s warning of punishment (Psalm 89:30 – 31)
a. The sons of David
b. The future kings
c. They must keep the law of God
d. They will be punished if they disregard the law of God:
i. Forsake God’s law
ii. Not walk in God’s judgment
iii. Break God’s statutes
iv. Not keep God’s commandments
e. The punishment of God
i. Their transgression with the rod
ii. Their iniquity with stripes
3. God’s graciousness even in punishment
a. God will not utterly take away His lovingkindness (Psalm 89:33a)
b. God will not allow His faithfulness to David to fail (Psalm 89:33b)
4. God’s great faithfulness in keeping His covenant!
a. God will not break His covenant with David (Psalm 89:34a)
b. God will not alter what He has promised David (Psalm 89:34b)
c. God’s solemn oath to David will be kept! (Psalm 89:35 – 37)
i. He has sworn in His holiness
ii. He will not lie to David
iii. He will graciously allow David’s seed to continue even though they sin
iv. He will establish their kingdom for David’s sake
v. This is a testament of the greatness of God’s faithfulness!
APPRECIATING HOW GRACIOUS GOD IS!
1. God knew the kings would sin against Him
2. God remains faithful to His covenant with David!
APPROPRIATE RESPONSES
1. To not take for God’s mercy and faithfulness for granted
2. To treasure God deeply
3. To lovingly keep His law in our heart and mind
