Text: Psalm 89:38 - 52
THE MESSIANIC REFERENCES IN PSALM 89
(Psalm 89:3 – 4, 28 – 29, 35 – 37)
1. Meditation on the Davidic covenant
a. God has made this covenant with David
b. God would establish his seed forever
c. God will build up his throne to all generations
2. Messianic references
a. Prophecy concerning the Messiah King
b. God’s Messiah King will endure forever
c. None of the kings of Judah could have fulfilled this!
THE REFERENCE TO THE HUMAN KINGS IN PSALM 89
1. God appointed the kings
a. David (Psalm 89:19 – 28)
b. The sons of David (Psalm 89:30 – 37)
c. The kings are anointed by God (Psalm 89:38, 51)
d. They are called God’s servants! (Psalm 89:50)
2. What stands out is God Himself!
a. God’s mercy (Psalm 89:1, 2, 14, 24, 28)
b. God’s faithfulness (89.1-Ps.89.2" class="scriptRef">Psalm 89:1, 2, 5, 8, 24, 33)
c. God’s lovingkindness (Psalm 89:33, 49)
3. What is expected of the kings (Psalm 89:30 – 31, Cf. Deuteronomy 17:14 – 20)
a. To walk in God’s ways
b. To keep God’s laws
c. They must learn to fear God and hence humbly walk in His ways (Deuteronomy 17:19)
THE FAILURE OF THE KINGS AND THE SUFFERING OF THE ENTIRE NATION
1. This was felt deeply by the Psalmist (Psalm 89:38 – 51)
2. This was the anguish of the Psalmist
a. He cried out to God in anguish (Psalm 89:38 – 49)
b. He bore the reproach of all the many peoples (Psalm 89:50)
THE EXAMPLE OF THE PSALMIST AS A SERVANT OF GOD
1. His deep knowledge of God
2. His astute understanding of God’s covenant
3. His strong feelings and identification with the people
4. He obviously cared and felt much with the people’s suffering
5. He cried out to God with the burden that he bore in his heart!
6. He learnt many lessons as he meditated on God
7. He learnt lessons of God through struggling in prayer
8. He finally humbly pleaded with God to “Remember” His servants
9. He learnt to exercise deeper faith in God
a. To sing of God’s mercies (Psalm 89:1)
b. To make known God’s faithfulness (Psalm 89:1)
c. To bless the LORD forever (Psalm 89:52)
