A Psalm of the sons of Korah. A Song.
GOD’S LOVE FOR ZION
(Psalm 87:1 – 3)
1. This is well expressed in this Psalm
2. Zion
a. Historically Jerusalem
b. This is the capital city of Israel
c. This is called the city of God
3. Appreciation for Zion
a. His foundation is in the holy mountains
b. His gates are loved by the LORD
c. There is a special love for Zion expressed!
i. More than all the dwellings of Jacob
ii. Comparatively speaking
iii. Chosen to be the place where God would dwell among His people
d. Glorious things are spoken of you!
i. By all who are faithful servants of the Lord
ii. By all who love the Lord and His people
iii. By all who are true worshipers of the Lord
iv. They delight in the presence of God!
GOD’S WORD SPOKEN TO HIS PEOPLE
(Psalm 87:4)
1. “I will make mention of…”
a. God speaking to His people
i. “To those who know Me”
ii. The people of God have the privilege to “know” God personally!
b. God makes mention of the enemies He has enabled Israel to overcome!
i. Rahab – Egypt (Isaiah 19)
ii. Babylon (Isaiah 14:22 – 23)
iii. Philistia (Isaiah 14:28 – 32)
iv. Tyre (Isaiah 23)
v. Ethiopia (2 Chronicles 14:9 – 15, Isaiah 18)
2. “This one was born here”
a. A special privilege to be a citizen of the city of God!
b. The LORD Himself will defend His people and fight for them!
GREAT CHALLENGES
1. To appreciate the Lord’s love for us as His people
2. To treasure what it means to be people of God
a. To be born of God (John 1:12 – 13)
b. To be a citizen of the heavenly Jerusalem / Zion! (Hebrews 12:22 – 23)
