For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled……

=a prominent Pharisee
Why did Jesus go there? 14:1
=to eat
What efforts did Jesus notice among the guests? 14:7
=Jesus saw people’s heart
Why did the guests try to pick the places of honor?
=Status: seat decides status, power and honor
3. The principle of honor.
a. He who exalts himself; What place does Jesus teach not to take when invited? 14:8
=do not take the place of honor
What will the host do when a more distinguished person arrives? 14:9
=Give this person your seat
What place will he take plus humiliation? 14:9
=the least important place
What makes him to grab the place of honor?
=pride, better than other
How do you like a person who exalts himself?
=dislike
b. He who humbles himself; What place does Jesus teach to take when invited? 14:10
=take the lowest place
What will the host do when he sees his guest at the lowest place? 14:10
=Friend, move up to a better place
What place will he take plus honor? 14:10
=higher place and honor
What makes him to take the least place?
=humble: Philippians 2:3 in humility value others above yourselves
How do you like a person who is humble?
=people love the person
c. What is the nature of honor?
=not by griping, but coming by others
What principle is there in pride and in humility? 14:11
=For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted
d. How does God treat the proud and the humble?
James 4:6 God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.
Ez. 17:24 All the trees of the field will know that I the Lord bring down the tall tree and
make the low tree grow tall. I dry up the green tree and make the dry tree flourish.
I the Lord have spoken, and I will do it.
Obadiah1:3 The pride of your heart deceived you, you who live in the clefts of the rocks ……….,
you who say to yourself, ‘Who can bring me down to the ground?’
=God is offended by the proud
=we become proud when we become rich and safe in job, status and heart.
=the pride of your heart
=Nation and kingdom, civilization and company and rise and fall
e. Why is a person proud? humble
=I am somebody =I am nobody. Genesis18: I am dust and ashes
=I am better than you =I am helpless and a sinner
=I have something to show =God! Have mercy on me
=successful people =pray: lead us not into temptation and deliver us from evil
=very self-righteous: Luke 18:11-12 =They know weakness and sinfulness
=self-confident =They rely on prayer
=self-reliant =They know all things comes from God for the glory of God
How will a proud person become humble?
=They must lose everything
=When they realize that they are sinners
f. What is good about having a dinner with friends, brothers, relatives, and rich neighbors?
=comfortable, mutual interest
What is not good about it? 14:12b
=they will invite back, so you will be repaid
What is not good about having a banquet with the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind?
=not comfortable, they also may not come
=It bring down your status.
=Just wasting and there is no return
What is good about it? 14:14
=we will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous
Why will God repay our charity at the resurrection? Mt. 25:35,36,40
=God loves our charity. He will reward us. God will pay back.
Do you reach out the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind?
=reach out one at a time.
=we need to make personal effort.
=prayer for others
