“The SON is Superior to Angels”
Hebrews 1:4-14

1) VISUALLY Angels are awesome (scary).

3) Angels appear in VARIOUS forms.
Ordinarily when angels are visible, they have a human-like appearance and are often mistaken for men (see Genesis 18:2; 19:1, 2; Mark 16:5).

4) Angels have at least 3 VOCATIONS seen in scripture.
Angels continuously worship and praise the God they serve (Job 38:7; Psalm 103:20; Isaiah 6:1–3; Revelation 4:8; 5:9–12).
Angels communicate God’s message to man.
Acts 7:38, 53 Daniel 10:10–15; Revelation 17:1; 21:9; 22:16
Matthew 1:19–24; Luke 1:11–28; 2:9–12
Angels minister to believers.

Vs. 4-13
1) Jesus is the PREEMINENT Son.
Vs. 4-5
According to Jewish thought, a person’s name revealed his essential nature and could express rank and dignity.
The “more excellent name” that Jesus possesses is “SON.”
While the angels collectively may be termed “the sons of God” (Job 1:6), no angel would be given this title individually.
The first quotation is from Psalm 2:7:
"You are My Son,
Today I have begotten You"?
The word begotten is used 5 times
The NIV translates it, “one and only”
THE TERM SIMPLY MEANS UNIQUE. Col 1:15-17

Jesus was always God’s Son, and God was his Father.
Vs. 5 "You are My Son,
Today I have begotten You"?
This refers to Christ’s exaltation and enthronement as Son subsequent to the resurrection
Romans 1:4, Acts 13:32-33

The second quotation is from 2 Samuel 7:14.
Vs. 5b "I will be to Him a Father,
And He shall be to Me a Son"?
This is also a quotation from a well-known Messianic passage, commonly called the Davidic Covenant.
Luke 1:32, 33; cf. Luke 1:68; Romans 1:3

2) Jesus receives PRAISE because He is the FIRST in Order.
Vs.6
The term “firstborn” in the Bible does not always mean “born first.”
The title is one of rank and honor, for the firstborn receives the inheritance and the special blessing.

Vs. 6b "Let all the angels of God worship Him."
Here he turns to the final lines of verse 43 of the Song of Moses (Deuteronomy 32:43).
“Let all God’s angels worship him,” is not in the Hebrew original but is a Greek addition.

3) Jesus is PLACED on a throne as God.
Vs. 7-9
The emphasis of the writer of Hebrews is clear: angels sometimes spectacularly inhabit wind and fire to do God’s bidding—but in doing this they are only servants.

BUT IN CONTRAST
Vs. 8 But to the Son He says:
"Your throne, O God, is forever and ever;
A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom.

Here God the Father refers to Jesus as “O God”.
Word order is especially important in Greek.
And here is how this passage reads literally from a Greek text.
“the throne of you, THE GOD, unto the age of ages”
Gen 49:10

4) The PERPETUATION of his existence is compared to the universe.
Vs.10-12
Jesus Christ is the Creator, and one day He will do away with the old creation and bring in a new creation.
2 Peter 3:12-13

5) Jesus is seen in the POSITION of the victor.
Vs. 13
Again, the writer quotes Psalm 110:1.
The fact that Jesus Christ is now at the Father’s right hand (the place of honor) is mentioned many times in the New Testament
(see Matt. 22:43–44; 26:64; Mark 16:19; Acts 2:33–34; Rom. 8:34; Col. 3:1; Heb. 1:3, 13; 8:1; 10:12; 12:2; 1 Peter 3:22).
