“Jesus Our Great Savior”
Hebrews 2:5–18

1. His (our) ______________ in the future kingdom.
Vs. 5-9
1) His position in the future will be as SOVEREIGN ruler.
Vs. 5
The “world to come” is a rabbinic term for the Kingdom of the Messiah.

2) As our SAVIOR Jesus gained back the dominion that was lost by mankind.
Vs. 6
God CELEBRATES His original intention for man.
The quotation here is from Psalm 8:4–6.
Gen 1:28
Man is now COMPARED to angels.
Vs. 7
Man was made a little lower than the angels.
“little lower” can mean space, time or degree
1 Corinthians 6:3
Man will be CROWED by God.
Vs. 7b
The CURRENT condition of man in this world is different.
Vs. 8
Vs. 8b But now we do not yet see all things put under him.

3) The SOLUTION to this dilemma is Jesus.
“But we see Jesus!” (Heb. 2:9)
It is involved His SUBMISSION
Vs. 9b who was made a little lower than the angels,
It involved His SUFFERING
Vs. 9b
Jesus Christ became man that He might suffer and die for man’s sin and restore the dominion that was lost because of sin.

2. He was ________________ in bringing us salvation.
Vs. 10-13
1) Jesus is the PIONEER of our faith.
What God did through his suffering Son fits with His eternal power. The word Captain literally means “pioneer—one who opens the way for others to follow.”

2) Jesus was made PERFECT through suffering.
Vs.
Jesus became perfect, mature, fulfilled his purpose in coming.

3) Jesus suffering makes salvation POSSIBLE.
He is not much of a Savior if he cannot save.
Paul quotes three Messianic passages in the Greek Old Testament. They are Psalm 22:22 and Isaiah 8:17 and 8:18 respectively.

In Psalm 22 we have His DECLARATION to His brothers.

4) Our salvation now PLACES us in the family of God.
The second Old Testament quotation are from Isaiah.

"I will put My trust in Him."
Isaiah 8:17b
Isa 7:14, Isa 9:6

Isa 8:17-18
So, what are the signs and symbols of Isaiah and his two sons?
Both boys had been given prophetic names.
It is as if he places his arms around the sons and daughters of the suffering church and says,
“Here am I, and the children God has given me” (v. 13)—

3. He set us free from the _____________ and POWER and sin.
Vs. 14-16
1) His DECENT into humanity.
Vs. 14

2) His DESTRUCTION of Satan’s power over us.
Vs.
The word “destroy” does not mean “annihilate,” for it is obvious that Satan is still alive and at work.
The word means “render inoperative, make of none effect.”
Satan is not destroyed, but he is disarmed.
The final authority of death is in the hands of our God (Deut. 32:39; Matt. 10:28; Rev. 1:18).

The death, burial, and resurrection of Christ have given us victory! (1 Cor. 15:55–58)
John 14:19

3) It is based on His DECISION to help the descendants of Abraham.
It was necessary for Jesus to become a Jewish man.

He is merciful toward people and faithful toward God.
He can never fail in His priestly ministries.

2) He now has to ability to RELATE to us.
Jesus is able to identify with us.
Jesus is able to sympathize with us.
