“Endurance in the Last Days”
Luke 21: 1-19

1. The CIRCUMSTANCES at the time of the destruction of the temple.
Vs. 6

1) This prediction was SPECIFIC.
This is not the first time there has been a prophecy concerning the destruction of the temple.

​2) The predication included a SIGN
Vs. 7
​​This is not the same question given in Matthews Gospel.
​​The, these things, is a reference to the Temple’s destruction.
​​
It began with Cestus Gallus was the Roman leader who laid siege to Jerusalem after the 66 AD revolt. In 70 AD Titus enters the city and 1,100,000 Jews were killed. They would then destroy the temple not leaving on stone upon another just as Jesus had predicted.

2. The world CONDITIONS prior to the Great Tribulation.
Vs. 8-19​
Jesus gives us 4 CONDITIONS IN THESE VERSES to watch for:
Matthew includes a statement that is extremely helpful.
Matt 24: 8
​
1) There will be Religious COUNTERFEITS
​Matt. 24: 4-5
The deception will be widespread.

How do you keep from being deceived?
By knowing the word of God.

2) There will be Political and Military CONFLICTS
Vs. 10
​In verse 10 we have a change or a break in the grammar.
Vs. 10 Then
​We are not to be terrified when we hear about wars.
​But there is a type of war we should see as a sign.
It is important to understand that "Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom” is a Jewish idiom.
​And it means that these will be World Wars.

3) The Physical CONDITIONS will deteriorate
Vs. 11
“pestilences”- infectious, deadly diseases

World’s Worst Pestilences (A.D.):
The last 104 years-
American polio epidemic: 1916
Spanish Flu: 1918-1920
Asian Flu: 1957-1958
AIDS pandemic: 1981-present
H1N1 Swine Flu pandemic: 2009-2010
West African Ebola epidemic: 2014-2016
Zika Virus epidemic: 2015-present day
Covid19- 2019-present day

1st 1,000 years after Christ died-
​18 major famines
The next (almost) 1000 years-
​223 major famines

AN INCREASE IN EARTHQUAKES
​ (Matthew 24: 7; Mark 13: 8; Luke 21: 11)
As world conditions get worse or even economic conditions get worse people become more susceptible to being deceived.
Notice the end of verse 11.
Vs. 11b and there will be fearful sights and great signs from heaven.
​​What is that? We do not know.

4) There will be CONSTANT persecution of the Jewish people
Vs. 12
In other words, persecution would begin right away and will continue.

1- This persecution is for their PRESENT time . Vs. 12

​-2 The persecution will be for a PURPOSE. Vs. 13
​​You will be witnesses Acts. 1: 8

3- This persecution will be PRECISE to the Jewish people.
Vs. 12 delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons

​4- The persecution will come with a PROMISE. Vs.15
Vs. 18 But not a hair of your head shall be lost. ​
This is also a Jewish idiom. It simply means you will not lose your soul.
​
​5-The persecution will be PERSONAL. Vs. 16
"you will be betrayed by parents , brothers , relatives and friends"

Remember these things are not signs of the return of Jesus Christ.
​These are the signs prior to the Tribulation.
​
​Jesus exhorts all of us to stand firm.
​​Vs. 19 By your patience possess your souls.
