“The Pivotal Question
We Must All Answer?
Luke 22: 47-71
1. The DECEIT of Judas
Vs. 47-48
1) The DECEIT of Judas was seen as he identifies Jesus.
It was customary for the disciples to greet their Rabbi or Master with a kiss. But for Judas it was a sign.
Matt 26: 48, John 18: 4-6
2. The apostle’s DEFENSE of Jesus.
Vs. 49-53
Peter was fighting the wrong enemy. This was Satan’s hour and he was the real enemy and not the men that had come to arrest Jesus.
Eph 6: 12, 2 Cor 10: 3-5
3. The DENIAL of Peter
Vs. 54-62
There would be 6 trials that Jesus would endure.
There were 3 Jewish trials and 3 before the Gentiles Rulers.
1) Peter had never followed the COMMAND to watch and pray.
Matt 26: 31-32
John 18: 8
2) Peter’s actions were in CONTRAST to the righteous man of Psalm 1.
Peter STOOD by their fire of the enemy. Jn 18
Peter SAT at the fire of the enemy.
3) The COMPASSION of Jesus brought repentance to Peter.
It was probably not a look of reproach, but rather one of compassion. It is to Peter’s credit that all the Lord had to do was look at him to bring him to the place of repentance.
Why does Jesus show this kind of grace to Peter?
Jesus knows the outcome. Jesus knows the maturity that will eventually come to Peter. Jesus sees the man Peter will become.
Christ had said,
“when you have turned back” (v. 32).
Lam 3: 22-23
4. The DETERMINATION of the Sanhedrin.
Vs. 63-71
1) Jesus was beaten RUTHLESSLY by the Temple Guard.
Vs. 63 Now the men who held Jesus mocked Him and beat Him.
Keep in mind that these are the Jewish guards that are beating him.
2) The Sanhedrin had already determined to REJECT Jesus.
The Sanhedrin meets at daybreak.
Vs.66
This now would be the formal Jewish trial.
What is the key issue of this trial?
Does Jesus of Nazareth claim to be the Messiah or Christ?
If so, then his claim to be the Son of God would make him a blasphemer and by Levitical law punishable by death.
Vs. 67 "If You are the Christ, tell us."
Jesus makes the statement they have been waiting to hear.
Vs. 69 Hereafter the Son of Man will sit on the right hand of the power of God." That our Lord is seated at the right hand of the Father is a truth that is often repeated in the New Testament (Heb. 1: 3; 8: 1; 10: 12; 12: 2; 1 Peter 3: 22; Acts 2: 33; 5: 31; 7: 55–56; Rom. 8: 34; Eph. 1: 20; Col. 3: 1).
This is the place of honor, authority, and power; and by claiming this honor, Jesus was claiming to be God.
Vs. 70 Then they all said, "Are You then the Son of God?"
The key word is "then".
They knew Psalm 110 and so they say, then are you the son of God?
Jesus answer is clear and explicit. YES!
Dan 7: 13-14
This is a clear statement of Deity by Jesus.
3) The destiny of Jesus is REVEALED.
Jesus said he had the right, to sit at the right hand of the Father. Again this is a reference to Psalm 110: 1
John 5: 18
There is a total of 16 names clearly implying the deity Jesus.
The total number of passages reaches into the hundreds.
The opening verses of John’s Gospel describe the relationship as eternal equality: John 1:1, 2
