“The Day Jesus Died”
Luke 23: 26-56

1. Jesus is led away to CALVARY
Vs.26-31
1) On the way to Calvary the PRIVILEGE of carrying the cross is given to another.
Vs. 26
The physical condition of Jesus made it impossible for him to continue to carry the cross.

This terrible situation led to a changed life.
There is good reason to believe that Simon was converted.

Mark 15: 21, Romans 16:13
Taking up the cross is a technical term used for someone who was a criminal and on his way to death.
Luke 9: 23-24

2) On the way to Calvary great judgment is PREDICTED.
Jesus gives a warning to the women who were weeping.
Vs. 28
Jesus is speaking of the great judgment that was to come upon an entire nation and upon Jerusalem in particular.

2. Jesus is CRUCIFIED like a common criminal.
Vs.32-49
1) While being Crucified Jesus PRAYS for the forgiveness of his enemies.
"Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do."*
Jesus here fulfills Isaiah 53: 12 as he makes intercession for the transgressors.

2) While being Crucified Jesus fulfilled PROPHECY.
Jesus fulfills 30 prophecies in this day alone.
The guards gambled for his clothing.
Ps 22: 18, Ps 69: 21, Ps 22: 7-8, Ps 22: 6-8

3) While being Crucified Jesus promises PARADISE to a thief.
Vs. 42
Was there a bad thief and a good one?
No, they were both bad, but one was saved.

This thief came to recognize several things.
• He was guilty and deserved death
• Jesus was innocent and he was dying in another’s place.
• Jesus was coming into his kingdom and it would be after his death.

Paradise is a Persian word brought into the Greek.
Paul mentions it in 2 Corinthians 12
It is mentioned again in Revelation 22.

4) While being Crucified there is a PICTURE of judgment and hope
Vs. 44
Darkness in the Old Testament is always a sign of judgement.

The picture of hope is the veil in the temple.
Vs. 45 and the veil of the temple was torn in two.
Matt 27: 51-53

We believe that it torn around 3:00 pm, when Jesus died.

Up to this point man had been shut out from the presence of God under the Old Testament economy.
God's presence was open now for all who would come by faith in Christ.
Heb 10: 19-23

5) While being Crucified Jesus prays the PRAYER of a child.
"Father, 'into Your hands I commit My spirit.'"*

This was actually a bedtime prayer used by Jewish children, and it tells us how our Lord died: confidently, willingly (John 10: 17–18), and victoriously.

John 19: 30
“It is finished”
The word tetelestai is unfamiliar to us, but it was used by various people in everyday life in those days.

the most meaningful meaning of tetelestai was that used by the merchants:
“The debt is paid in full!”

3. Jesus is CARRIED to a borrowed tomb.
Vs.50-56

1) It is Joseph that PROVIDES a tomb for the burial of Jesus.
Joseph and his friend Nicodemus (John 19: 38–42) were both members of the Jewish council, but they had not been present to vote against Jesus.

2) It was critical to the gospel that Jesus be PLACED in a seal tomb.
Vs. 53
When they laid Jesus into the new tomb, they fulfilled Isaiah 53:9, and they kept the Romans from throwing His body on the garbage dump outside the city.
