Death penalty and the Bible. What does it say? Well, there are many Bible verses that demand capital punishment for certain violations of the law. A study in Deuteronomy 17.
Prison systems are not approved under God's law. Violators of the law paid restitution for crimes like stealing, received a public beating such as whipping, or they received the death penalty. You see, according to God's law no criminal has the right to sit in a prison cell funded by taxpayer money.
Think about it for a moment.
Is it justice to force victims of crimes to pay for the housing of those who committed crimes against them? That's what happens today, and that is the idiocy of our current correctional system.
These are the crimes for which the death penalty is required under God's law:
Murder (Gen 9:5-6; Num 35:16-21, 30-33; Deut 17:6; Lev 24:17)
Rape (Deut 22:25)
Sodomy (Lev 18:22; 20:13)
Adultery (Lev 20:10; Deut 22:21-24)
Bestiality (Ex 22:19; Lev 20:15-16)
Incest (Lev 20:11-12, 14)
False Witness involving a capital offense (Deut 19:16-20)
Kidnapping (Ex 21:16; Deut 24:7)
Witchcraft (Ex 22:18)
Human Sacrifice - Abortion? (Lev 20:2-5)
Blasphemy (Lev 24:11-14, 16, 23)
Striking or cursing a father or mother (Ex 21:15, 17; Lev 20:9)
Non-correctable juvenile delinquents (Deut 21:18-21)
Sacrificing to false gods (Ex 22:20)
False Prophets (Deut 13:1-10)
Contempt of court (Deut 17:12)
Sabbath desecration, now superseded per Col 2:16 (Ex 35:2; Num 15:32-36)
A priest's daughter who commits fornication (Lev 21:9)
What about society? Isn't society to blame for people committing such acts?
Wrong. God holds individuals responsible for their own actions. One cannot blame society or plead insanity. They must pay for their actions.
At the mouth of two witnesses, or three witnesses, shall he that is worthy of death be put to death; but at the mouth of one witness he shall not be put to death. --Deuteronomy 17:6
