The prophet Micah had foretold that Elijah would return before the Messiah's arrival. Was John the Baptist actually this prophesied Elijah? John the Baptist denied that he was (John 1:21) but Jesus here asserts that John was, in spirit, the long-awaited Elijah. Who was right, and is this spirit of Elijah present with us today?
