Luke 3:7-15
7John [the Baptist] said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, “You bunch of snakes! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? 8Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. 9The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.”
10“What should we do then?” the crowd asked.
11John answered, “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.”
12Even tax collectors came to be baptized. “Teacher,” they asked, “what should we do?”
13“Don’t collect any more than you are required to,” he told them.
14Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?”
He replied, “Don’t extort money and don’t accuse people falsely-be content with your pay.”
The Lord's message to the people here was simply that we are all in this together. Rain falls on both the just and the unjust.
Today is a good day but for your neighbor it is a bad day.
Tomorrow may be a bad day for you but a great day for your neighbor.
Move beyond selfish acts and live in a world where no one lives isolated in their own selfish world.
It seems an impossible challenge right now.
There will come a time for God's family when we finally and truly share and share alike.
Do you know that you are part of God's family?
Are you truly repulsed by sin in your life?
Have you changed your attitude toward sin and trusted the attoning death of Jesus upon the cross as payment for all of your sins?
You too will one day live in a perfect physical existence where neighbors do truly love one another unselfishly.
