Ecclesiastes is an unusual book with an unsettling message; ‘’Meaning meaningless, everything is meaningless!’’

To understand it, we must first meet the teacher. He is not a grumpy cynic, but as the narrator describes him, a man of wisdom who carefully searched out the truth. These are words we can trust. The teachers favourite word is "hebel" (Hebrew). Often translated as "meaningless", it also communicates emptiness, futility and transience. Life is not without purpose, but because of "hebel", it is beset by frustration.
