“Entering into God’s Rest”
Hebrews 4: 1-10
1. There remains the ____________ of entering God’s rest.
Vs. 1
Heb 3: 18-19
1) There is a REST that is promised.
2) The RESPONSE that is dangerous.
Vs. 1b
It is wrong to think that Jesus is not enough
WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT JESUS AS THE MESSIAH Is CRITICAL TO ENTERING GOD’S REST.
2. The ______________ of good news has been announced.
Vs. 2
1) The PROCLAMATION of Joshua and Caleb.
Israel had heard “the gospel preached” (that is, the good news brought by Caleb and Joshua that the land was theirs for the taking
The promise of the Land was first given to Abraham.
We refer to it as the ABRAHAM COVENANT.
The Covenant can be broken down into 2 aspects.
There are the Personal blessings. Genesis 12: 2
There are Global blessings. Genesis 12: 3
Gen 12:5-7
2) The PROCLAMATION of the good news to us.
The Good News to us is based on the message of Jesus Christ.
Rom 10:17
3. We must ___________ faith to enter God’s rest.
Vs. 3-5
1) There is a PREREQUISITE for entering God’s rest.
Vs. 3
“we who have wholeheartedly trusted enter that rest.”
Thus, it is spelled out in no uncertain terms that faith that pleases God is belief plus trust.
THE PRINCIPLE IS SO SIMPLE: THE MORE TRUST, THE MORE REST.
2) The benefit of rest is PERSONAL to God.
We note first that he twice quotes Psalm 95:11—
“They shall never enter my rest” (vv. 3, 5; cf. 3:11, 18).
3) The PRIMARY example of rest comes from creation.
Vs. 4
God entered REST when he finished creating the universe.
John 5:16-17
4. Entering into God’s rest is more than a ____________.
Vs. 6-8
David spoke of God’s rest and therefore it is available Today.
The rest of entering the Land was only a type.
And there must be more, because David mentions during his times.
Today meant “now” in their time—and that is what it means today.
2 Cor 6:2
5. The ______________ of God must make every effort to enter God’s rest.
Vs. 9-10
1) There CONTINUES to be the opportunity to enter God’s rest as seen in CREATION.
Vs. 9
Paul changes the word for REST in vs. 9.
Up to now he has used a word that means, “to cease activity”. Now he uses the Greek word, Sabbitmos Or SABBATH
2) There CONTINUES to be the opportunity to enter God’s rest
as seen in Jesus.
Vs. 10
To show how the “HE” is a reference to Jesus let’s look at the context.
Heb 3:1-3, Heb 4:14-15, Heb 5:1-2
He is the pioneer and captain of our salvation—the ultimate Joshua (cf. 2:10).
3) We must CEASE from our own good works and receive God’s rest by faith.
God rested when He finished the work of Creation.
God’s Son rested when He completed the work of the new creation.
So, what is the REST of God for us?
1) It is a promise, and it is for TODAY.
The offer of REST is still available.
2) It is a completed REST as seen in Creation and the work of Christ on the Cross.
Matt 11:28-30
3) And therefore, we can also say as believers, we experience God’s REST to the degree that we believe and obey his promises.
The greater our acceptance and submission, the greater rest we experience.
4) The ultimate REST we will experience will be in heaven.
