Sunday, May 15, 2022: “Freedom and the Law” May 15th, 2022: Freedom and the Law, Sunday School Lesson Galatians 3:18-29
In this week’s lesson Paul explained to the Galatian Christians the roles of law and faith. He referred to God’s covenant promises to Abraham that were fulfilled through his Seed, Jesus Christ. In this lesson, Paul argues that by means of faith in Christ, both the Jews, who had been taught under the law and the Gentiles, who had been outside the law, come together as joint heirs of God.

I. GOD’S LAW AND GOD’S COVENANT (Galatians 3:18-22)
Believers are justified by faith, not by keeping the law, even though the law had a purpose (Galatians 3:18-19).
God’s promise to Abraham and the law do not conflict with each other; they actually complement each other (Galatians 3:20-21).
“the law” was “added” or given to make people aware of the sinfulness of sin and how guilty they were of sin. The “promises of God” refer to the teachings that we are justified or counted not guilty by God solely by faith through His grace. Without “the law” we wouldn’t know that we are sinners and in need of God’s grace (see Romans 3:20). Therefore, “the law” and grace are not at odds with each other, they actually complement each other.
II. GOD’S LAW AND THE CHRISTIAN (Galatians 3:23-25)
Faith takes a back seat to rules and regulations when we let them rule our lives (Galatians 3:22-23).
The law was good in that it revealed man’s need for a Savior (Galatians 3:24-25).
III. THE BENEFITS OF FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST (Galatians 3:26-29)
When we become one in Christ, barriers that once divided us become nonexistent (Galatians 3:26-29).

As a result of Jesus’ redemptive blood, both Jewish and Gentile Christians were adopted into God’s family as sons and daughters and are heirs of God through faith in Jesus Christ. Regardless of our backgrounds, every person who comes to salvation in Jesus Christ must do so on the same basis: through faith. It is only through Christ that believers will become heirs of the promise given so long ago. The law could never do this. Like us, the Galatian Christians received salvation when they put their faith in Jesus Christ, not by keeping the law. Too many people try to complicate their faith by adding works to it. But there is an acronym, “KISS” which means “keep it super simple.” It should be applied when telling anyone how to be saved. Acts 16:31 says, “Believe on the LORD Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.” Can it get any simpler than that? I don’t think so!
