September 11, 2022 Sunday School Lesson God Chooses The Younger Twin Genesis 25:19-34 Jacob over Esau
“And the LORD said unto her, Two nations are in thy womb, and two manner of people shall be separated from thy bowels; and the one people shall be stronger than the other people; and the elder shall serve the younger” (Genesis 25:23).
Our lesson this week reveals God’s sovereign choice of Jacob over Esau and at the same time interweaves human factors such as parental favoritism, worldly values, and deceitful scheming. In this lesson, we see how God used twin boys to begin to separate nations that have affected history to the present day. Esau and Jacob were rivals in the womb and they would also be rivals in the history of the world. Our lesson this week shows us that our God is the sovereign Ruler of history. Esau and Jacob were born into a family chosen by God to begin two great nations. One nation would be blessed by God and be a blessing to the world. The other nation would oppose that blessed nation.
Nothing is too great or too insignificant to take to God in prayer (Genesis 25:19-21).
When there are situations and circumstances in our lives that are puzzling and troubling, we should take them to the LORD (Genesis 25:22).
God doesn’t have to use our methods and customs to accomplish His tasks, because His ways are not our ways (Genesis 25:23-24; Isaiah 55:8-9).
Be careful, what seems insignificant to you may be significant to God (Genesis 25:25-26).
Showing favoritism always leads to division (Genesis 25:27-28).
Taking advantage of others is always wrong (Genesis 25:29-31).
Never trivialize things of long-term importance (Genesis 25:31-34; Proverbs 23:23)
