Matthew 5:38-41 | Jesus said to his disciples: “You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. But I say to you, offer no resistance to one who is evil. When someone strikes you on your right cheek, turn the other one to him as well. If anyone wants to go to law with you over your tunic, hand him your cloak as well. Should anyone press you into service for one mile, go with him for two miles."'

What does it mean to “turn the other cheek”, “hand him your cloak as well”, and instead of one mile, “go with him for two miles? Why would God allow us to be hurt more? Why would he want us to suffer? Why He would command us not to resist evildoers?

Now, I understand why. After reading Matthew 5:39, it is okay to be a coward and simply keep it to myself. In all of these, I am more grateful for the lesson it taught me. The Lord is giving me courage and strength to face them differently, not in my way, His ways. I can still manage to be calm, smile, and act civil in front of my oppressors instead of confronting them. It is not being fake; it is love and goodness that reign. Sometimes, it is better to just let them do what they want, say what they want, and think what they want. It is not me that they are breaking. With the truth in me, I have nothing to worry about. With my silence, they become more furious and creative in making stories. I am at peace, while they are not.

If I have one thing that adds to my learnings today, it is this: Time has its own way of revealing the truth, and God is the ultimate judge, not me. He knows the truth, and He honors the righteous.
