Our Father, you are the Creator and Sustainer of heaven and earth. You are the true and living God whose word never fails, whose mercy never fades, and whose love never wavers. You are the rock on whom we build our hope. Even if we are faithless, you remain faithful for you cannot deny yourself. We must confess that faithless we have been. How often have we refused to regard fittingly the bride for whom Christ died? How many times have we failed to support her worship and work to the best of our ability? How frequently have we fallen short of submitting to her government and discipline gladly? Too seldom have we contended for her purity and peace in a manner worthy of our King. At times we have misbehaved in the household of God, which is the pillar and buttress of the truth. You blessed each one of us with gifts for the common good, yet time and again we have used them for selfish ends. Far short have we fallen from your glory. Our only plea is mercy. Please forgive us for Jesus’ sake. Amen.

Minister: How does the Spirit apply to us the redemption purchased by Christ?
Unison: The Spirit applies to us the redemption purchased by Christ, by working faith in us, and thereby uniting us to Christ in our effectual calling.
Minister: What is effectual calling?
Unison: Effectual calling is the work of God’s Spirit, whereby, convincing us of our sin and misery, enlightening our minds in the knowledge of Christ, and renewing our wills, he does persuade and enable us to embrace Jesus Christ, freely offered to us in the gospel.
