Once upon a time, during the years of the judges, there lived a man named Elkanah. He was married to two wives: Peninnah, who bore him many children and Hannah, who was barren.

Each year, they would bring their offerings to the temple at Shiloh to present to Eli, The Priest, before The Lord.

One day, Hannah prayed fervently in her heart that if she would just be pregnant and have one child, she would dedicate that child to The Lord's service forever. (In those days, women's status was dependent on not only who they married, but being barren or not. It also didn't help that Peninnah, knowing that Hannah was Elkanah's favorite wife, would rub it in her face that she was barren.)

Eli, The Priest, saw that her lips were moving, but that no sound was coming out during her prayer and accused her of being drunk. Hannah however said that neither wine nor beer touched her lips, but that she prayed ferventy out of the depths of her soul to God. Eli blessed her that her prayer may be answered. Up until that point, she was depressed and despondent and Elkanah asked his favorite wife why was she so sad. But after that prayer and Eli's blessing, she no longer felt depressed and ate.

Soon The LORD remembered Hannah and she bore a son, Samuel. She waited until he was weaned at about four years old, until she dedicated him to The Lord's temple at Shiloh, to serve Him all the days of his life, as she promised.

When that day came, she and Elkanah brought little Samuel to the temple at Shiloh and she let Eli know that God answered her prayer. She was now dedicating what she had promised God that she would do. Eli blessed her that God would grant her more children. Hannah prayed, thanking God. I am amazed that she didn't complain that she had to dedicate her first-born, as promised. She willingly and cheerfully gave him to The Lord's service. Each year she would make a little robe for Samuel and bring it to him at the temple in Shiloh. Samuel grew while Eli allowed his grown sons, Hophni and Phinehas, to continue to sin (taking the best of the meat for themselves and sleeping with the women who served in the temple).
